Mercy

“We can do this here in the living room,” Eleanor said, and he grumbled, shaking his head, muttering about crazy bats or something.

She didn’t catch all of it, but she wasn’t sure that she was meant to or that she wanted to.

She knew that he was trying to protect her, but she wanted to do this.

More like, she needed to do this.

And he had given her a safe space to.

He practically stomped the rest of the way into the living room, plopping down dramatically in a chair and pulling her down into his lap.

“You know I can sit in my own chair.” He just grunted at her, and she smiled, trying not to laugh. That was, until Sara walked in.

Sara hadn’t been around the last few days, and Garrett had said that Eleanor had a talk with her. She didn’t know if she was staying in the house or just staying away from them, but she hadn’t seen her at all.

And it was probably for the best based on the way that Garrett was glaring at her.

“I’ve asked Sara here for another set of eyes to go over all this information,” Eleanor said, as if there wasn’t a storm brewing between Sara and Garrett.

“As long as she keeps her mouth shut,” Garrett growled

“Garrett,” Eleanor snapped, showing a break in her ever-cheerful manor, with a burst of irritation.

“No.” Eleanor’s eyes widened slightly, as if she wasn’t used to being told no. “Respectfully, just no, and you know why.” Garrett and Eleanor stared off for just a moment, neither one of them backing down, till finally, Eleanor shook her head and looked away.

“So stubborn,” Eleanor muttered, and sat down in a huff, away from them. Sara continued to stand at the edge of the room, not coming in any farther and not saying anything.

“Right, so, I’ve touched Mary… the deceased,” Murphy stated, and Garrett shot up, barely holding on to her as she fell to the side.

“No fucking way! There is no fucking way she is doing this shit!” Garrett exploded.

“Garrett, sit down,” Eleanor snapped, and he shut his mouth, but glared down at his grandmother with a fury rolling off of him that she hadn’t seen from him before.

Hesitantly, and with a great deal of bravery that she didn’t know how she mustered up, she reached out and gently laid her hand on his arm. He immediately softened, his other hand coming up and weaving his fingers between hers as he took a deep breath.

Eleanor watched them curiously, and she was sure that Sara and Murphy were watching them as well, but she blocked it out, and focused only on Garrett.

“It’s okay. I want to do this. I want to help find this family, Mary, some peace,” she whispered softly.

“I don’t want you going through what she went through,” he said softly, knowing that she was indeed going to have to go through Mary’s last moments to find her killer.

“It will be worth it, and I will have you here with me,” she said, knowing that with him, she could get through anything.

It was crazy how fast someone’s life could change.

Sometimes all you needed was one person to back you up.

And hers was Garrett.

“Damn fucking straight, I’ll be here.”

“Garrett, language,” Eleanor admonished quietly, but she was smiling.

“Okay,” she said, turning to the agent, who was also smiling at them.

“Right.” He stepped forward. “How do we do this?” She took a deep breath of courage as Garrett wrapped his arms around her from behind, pressing his front to her back.
