As her tears began to fall in earnest, I took a deep shuddering breath. “I’m sorry,” I said more gently, trying to see through my pain.
“And I’m sorry about what happened to you. I know the situation with you and Otsana is different than mine with Ruby, because she was your partner. But a lot of time has passed. You should have told me the truth.”
“I wanted to, but I could never find the right time. The more time went by, the more worried I grew about your reaction. I wasn’t using you. I swear it, Natalie.”
Her lips parted but she said nothing, then turned away from me. “I’m sorry. I need some time.”
Before I could say anything else, she teleported.
Sif leaped into the sky as I froze the ground, the pond, and the trees, her screech blending with my howl to create a symphony of sorrow.
