I was having so much fun talking to Jack, I hadn’t really thought about anything else. Like how my grandmother woulddismiss him with the first glimpse of his visible tattoos. It was nice not to consider what’s proper for a change.
In my experience, proper doesn’t give you orgasms.
Proper doesn’t even notice if you don’t orgasm.
I turn to face her, and color heats my cheeks as she smiles triumphantly. “I’ve never had a one-night stand before.”
“Girl.” She looks at me like my sanity has left the building. “That’s because you were in a long-term, boring-ass relationship for something stupid, like half your life.” She spins me around to face her. “There’s nothing wrong with sampling what’s being offered every now and then. How else are you supposed to figure out what you want?”
Before I can answer, she adds, “And that man looks cocky as hell, and I’ll bet he has the big dick to back it up. I’m pretty sure he could give you all sorts of things you want. And maybe a few you didn’t even know were an option.”
Yes, please.
Willa was never a fan of my ex-boyfriend. We’d been friends for years, and we both knew our parents hoped something more would develop. I tried, I really did. But there was absolutely no chemistry there. It ended over a year ago with no fanfare and little drama.
I’m the only one of my siblings who manages to stay under the radar... mostly.
Willa’s huge eyes twinkle just before firm hands settle on my hips, pulling me back against stronger thighs. I freeze but only for a single moment. Without even turning, I quickly realize it’s Jack. His masculine scent mixes with the stale scent of spilled beer, which still lingers on him, thanks to my earlier faux pas. Relaxing, I lean my head back against his chest, enjoying the crazy current zapping between us.
His lips skim my ear, and the warmth of his breath sends shivers down my spine. “You’re killing me. You know that, right?” he groans against me.
Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Ben inching closer, but I shake my head no.
Not wanting to be interrupted.
Not wanting this night to end.
“Silly man... you’re of no use to me dead.” I haven’t smiled this much—really smiledbecause I was enjoying myself and not because I was in front of people—in years.
I turn in his arms, and his eyes flare with something that looks a lot like desire. I drag my teeth over my bottom lip to make sure I’m not actually drooling while I imagine what it would take to see that look in his eyes again. We dance through a few more songs, his hands growing more bold with each new beat.
This man is sheer perfection. He’s easily an entire foot taller than me, with shoulders wider than even Ben’s could hope to be. His beer-soaked, thermal shirt stretches tight across a broad chest and over lean muscles in his arms, with just a hint of inked skin popping out at the neckline. Jet-black hair, shaved tight on the sides, hangs down into his eyes until he runs his fingers through it and makes me imagine all sorts of naughty thoughts.
Like how I’d like to run my fingers through it...
While his head is buried between my legs.
Willa’s hand on my shoulder startles me out of my break into fantasyland. I’d practically forgotten about her once Jack and Theo joined us on the dance floor. Theo’s standing next to her, but his wicked eyes are on me until Jack clears his throat.
My best friend watches us all carefully as an amused smile stretches across her face. “How about we get out of here?” Her eyes slowly travel up Theo’s big body before they turn to Jack’s, and I can’t help but wonder what she’s thinking.
Disappointment over the realization that my night of freedom has to end sooner rather than later comes crashing down over me as if I walked through a snowbank in the middle of winter.Damn.
“Why don’t you guys come back to our place?” She checks her watch. “We could pull an all-nighter and grab breakfast in a few hours.” She steps closer to Theo, who seems more than happy to go with the flow. Having spent a little bit of time with Jack and him, it’s easy to spot their dynamic. Jack definitely has the quiet, broody thing going on, while Theo seems more like the easygoing one.
I could definitely get onboard with an all-nighter. But as usual, commitment and responsibilities get in the way. I shake my head, disappointed. “I can’t. I promised Gabriella I’d meet her for breakfast.”
My oldest sister, Gabby, and I try to meet once a week because otherwise, we’d never see each other in person. Ever since Dad died, putting Gabby next in line for the throne our grandmother holds, the machine of the monarchy has kept us both way too damn busy. Being the children of the future king was one thing. She’d be queen eventually, but we’d hoped that would be at least forty years from now or more.
My grandmother is in her eighties.
My sister is being groomed much more quickly than she could have ever expected.
“Boo. That sucks.” She looks around, checking for Ben, if I had to guess. “Doesn’t mean we can’t continue this elsewhere. Honestly, Rora, the crowd is getting restless.”
Thank goodness I speak Willa and know this means she’s pretty sure I’ve been spotted.
Theo turns to Jack. “I’m down. I’ve had enough of the public tonight, and we’ve got a ton of shit happening tomorrow.Keeping our last night going a little longer sounds like a good plan to me.”
