Unease creeps down my spine as I watch the three dots play on the screen until the next message pops on the screen.
Hayden: We’re still stuck at the airport.
Hayden: They pushed our flight two times already, and so far, it doesn’t seem like we’ll be in the air today.
“What’s with that face?” Yasmin asks, glancing at me before returning her attention to the road.
“Hayden just told me his flight was pushed back and will most likely be canceled.”
“Shit, that sucks. So they won’t make it back today from Pittsburg?”
“No,” I shake my head. “I don’t think so.”
Me: This sucks.
Hayden: I know. It’s still not canceled, but…
I was surprised in the first place when I looked at their schedule only to realize that he’d be able to make it. Since the Christmas Ball was when we officially got together, it was always a special night for us, and we’ve gone to every single one since my freshman year of college.
Me: No worries, just stay safe and let me know when you find out something more, okay?
Hayden: I’ll keep you posted.
Me: Okay. Miss you.
Hayden: I miss you too.
Hayden: I know this sucks.
Hayden: We still have a couple of days off for the holidays, and you’re staying with me after that. It’s going to be okay.
Me: I know.
It isn’t the same though. This was our night.
I’m usually not a superstitious person, but damn, something about this whole situation doesn’t sit right with me.
Shaking my head, I try to push back the dark thought.
Hayden’s right; it’s going to be okay. It’s just one night.
Me: Let me know if something changes. :*
I let my phone drop in my lap, disappointment washing over me. I was excited for tomorrow night. Not just to see him, but it was our anniversary. I was excited to dress up and go out with him, drink champagne, and dance the whole night.
“Hey, you okay?” Yasmin asks, breaking me out of my thoughts.
“Yeah,” I tuck a strand of my hair behind my ear. “Just disappointed.”
“He would be here if he could.”
“I know that, but it doesn’t suck any less.” I glance at Yasmin to find her looking out at the traffic. “I’m sorry, here I’m bitching about it when you haven’t seen Nixon in even longer.”
“Don’t worry about it. Just because our situations are different doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to feel disappointed. Besides, Jade and I are flying to visit him this weekend.” Yasmin shakes her head. “I can’t believe this is it. A few more months before college is over, and I’ll be moving down to Florida while you’re staying here. We’ll be separated for the first time in four years. It feels surreal.”
“I know.” The corner of my lips tilts upward. “Who’d have thought those first few weeks that we’d actually be sad to be separated, huh?”
“I know.” Yasmin glances at me, a matching longing smile on her face before she returns her attention to the road. “Do you think they’ll play together ever again?”
