I breathe a sigh of relief, but it’s short-lived.

What if she didn’t make it that far?

No. She did. She had to.

I power on her phone and unlock it. Her pass code has been the same for years. I check her email, but I can’t find anything confirming a hotel stay.

Brooke’s smart. She doesn’t want to be found. She probably set up a separate email just for this so we wouldn’t find it. But that’s the thing about hotels—they require you to use a card to book.

Unless she’s staying at some shitty, cash-only motel.

I push the thought out of my mind. If I have to search every hotel room in this goddamned city to find her, I will.

While I’m waiting on Felix, I scroll through her text messages, skimming the ones with Imani, Liling, and Will. But there’s nothing—no mention of her leaving. She hasn’t even talked to any of them since before our fight.

I glance at the clock. It’s around five in the morning. I went to bed sometime around eleven. When did she slip out? How did she slip out?

The alarm is disabled, and her car is gone from the garage. And that’s when I remember.

I was so distracted when we got home last night that I forgot to close the garage door. No wonder she was able to leave without waking me up. She didn’t even have to make a sound.

I close it now before scouring her room, looking for any hint of where she went. Her laptop is gone—of course—and I can’t find a single clue. Sighing, I head downstairs to her office. The desk is piled with new textbooks and paperwork from her college.

If she left any trail, the evidence will either be in here or her room.

Nothing on top of her desk proves to be of any use. I’m rummaging in the drawers when I come across a loose envelope shoved into the back of one of them. It’s unmarked.

I tear it open, yanking out the lone piece of paper inside.

As I read it, my heart sinks.

Daisy, no. No.

When I’m done reading, I shove David’s letter into my pocket. He’s claiming that we’re the ones manipulating her, but he’s the only one doing that.

I did lie to her.

To keep her safe. To keep us all safe.

I can’t deny that finding out your brother and childhood friends don’t trust you would hurt like hell. But it was too big of a risk to make. Brooke wasn’t in a stable place when Alex killed Francis.

Not that I’d know personally. But I got enough updates from Alex and Dom.

Now? Now I need to find her and set things right before she downspirals—again—because of me.

IT DOESN’T TAKE LONG for Felix to find a pre-charge on Brooke’s debit card that leads us to the hotel she’s staying at. When I go to pick him up, he drags a woman out of his house and throws her into the backseat of the car.

“Dude. What the hell?” I turn to find her already trying to scramble out of the car, but Felix grabs her and shoves her back inside.

“Lock the doors,” he snaps. “And turn on child lock.”

I do, hoping it’ll get me some answers.

“You son of a bitch—”

“Save it, Willow.” Felix slides into the passenger seat.

“Felix!” she shrieks. “No one is supposed to know—”
