Then something struck me. “Do you think that’s why he dumped me, because he thought I only wanted him for his family? Because I didn’t.” I shook my head. “I would never date anyone for any other reason than I liked them and wanted to be with them. I wouldn’t have sex with you for your mom and dad, I swear.”
Shaw shuddered. “Please don’t talk about sex with me and my parents in the same breath, Nance. It’s not pleasant.”
That made me give a little laugh and suddenly I felt embarrassed for a whole different reason.
“I overreacted, didn’t I?”
He shook his head and put a hand on my shoulder. “No, no way,” he replied, his thumb grazing my neck and sending goosebumps all over my body. “Like you said, you told him because you thought you were close enough to share that.”
“Still, it’s not like it’s the end of the world.” I sagged, wanting to lean into his touch but it felt like it might be too needy, especially after what he’d just heard.
Shaw nodded and then removed his hand and rubbed it over his head. I missed him touching me, but I could see he was looking a little uncomfortable. Evidently, he was embarrassed at having touched me like that.
“Afternoon kids.” It was Mr. Callahan, and he was looking particularly happy with himself.
“Hey, Mr. C,” Shaw replied, giving him a quick nod of his head. When Mr. Callahan stopped walking, Shaw groaned under his breath. “Fuck.”
“I believe Jacob has your trophy, young man,” Mr. Callahan said, slapping Shaw on the back. “I can bring it around to the house if you’d like, or maybe we could have a presentation.”
Taking advantage of Shaw being distracted by Mr. Callahan I put one foot inside the car. Shaw was on high alert though and grabbed my arm.
“Sorry Mr. C, can we do this another time?” he asked, his eyes on me. “Nancy and I have something important to discuss.”
Mr. Callahan chuckled and shook his head. “No problem, but you take care that discussion doesn’t lead to another baby.”
“Oh my god,” I groaned. “Can this day get any more embarrassing?”
“Only if you’re caught with Shaw’s bare ass in the air.” Mr. Callahan laughed again and then carried on walking.
“I need to go.”
“You don’t,” Shaw replied. “We need to talk.”
“We don’t,” I said, with a heavy sigh. “And you didn’t need to come running after me. And you certainly don’t need to worry that I had sex with you for your folks.”
He shrugged. “Well, I guess now that you’re back with Minnesota, that’ll be the end of it.”
I took a step back and frowned, curious as to what he meant. “Sorry?”
“Now you’re back with him. Unless you’ve changed your mind after that.”
“I’m not back with him.” I curled my lip at the thought of it. “Why would you think that?”
Shaw leaned his head closer to mine and peered at my eyes. “You’re not?”
“No.” I shook myself. “Not ever going to happen. Like you said, he’s a dick.”
“But I saw him coming out of your apartment.”
“When were you at my apartment?” I leaned back against my car as I watched Shaw squirm a little.
“The day we were texting. The day after the engagement party.”
I remembered when that was, of course I did. The day when I’d started to wonder if he actually liked me. The day before he turned back into a douche.
Wait! Wasthatwhy he’d turned back into a douche?
“Was that why you went back to being horrible to me?” I asked, my eyes wide with surprise. “You thought I was back with him. You were jealous?”
