She sank down onto the edge of the sofa, and Declan joined her, taking the picture from her hands to study it. “What job?”

“She wanted a little marble statue of Venus that belonged to a billionaire with a summer villa in Capri. She met me for the hand-off herself and said something about giving it to her husband for their anniversary.”

Brogan frowned, taking the picture back from Evie and shuffling it into the stack. “Why pay someone to steal something like that when you could just have one commissioned?”

“I have no idea why the super-rich like to have what isn’t theirs. I only care about getting paid and not getting caught.”

“Where is he now?” Declan asked.

“I can’t find any other known associated aliases with Feinman’s name, so if I had to guess, I’d say he’s probably operating under his real name in the States. He has no reason to suspect we’d be able to connect the dots, and he could fly completely under the radar in the US that way. He’s got a secure bank account I’m trying to get into to see where he’s spending his money.”

“What if he’s using cash?”

Brogan crossed to the door. “Hopefully he’s dumber than that.”

When they were alone again, Evie got up to pace in the shaft of light that streamed from the bedroom.

“We’re close, Evie. The closest we’ve been. We need one last piece of the puzzle, and we’ve got him.”

“I know that.” She turned to face him, and he was surprised at the wide grin on her face. “This might actually be over soon.” She laughed, and the sound floated around him. “I was starting to mentally prepare myself to go on the run like Kiah did.”

“You what?” The thought made his heart stutter in his chest.

“I wasn’t going to sit here and wait around for him to strike. To kill someone else I loved. I’ve lived life as a ghost for a long time, but…”

He cupped her face in his hands. “But?”

“But I didn’t want to. The thought made me sick to my stomach. I would have, no doubt about it. If that’s what it would have taken, I’d have done it. But I’d have hated every minute of it. Every minute…” her voice caught. “Every minute away from you.”

“I’d never have let you go.”

She grinned, eyebrows raised. “Who says you could have stopped me?”

He chuckled, sliding his hand down to her lower back and pulling her closer. “I guess we’ll never have to find out.”

She rose on her tiptoes and pressed a soft kiss against his lips. “I guess not.”

Declan lifted her into his arms and carried her into the bedroom, kicking the door to the balcony shut, closing out the crisp night air and the man who watched from the trees.

ChapterThirty-Four

Evie was jolted awake by the ear-shattering shriek of the alarm. She sat up, covering her ears with her hands as Declan reached for the light.

“What the fuck makes the alarm go off?” she yelled over the shrill warning tone.

“Someone forcing a door, motion, shattering glass. I’ll go check the house.”

“I’ll go with you.”

“No,” he pressed a quick kiss to her lips. “Stay where I know you’re safe.”

She watched him roll out of bed and pull on a pair of sweats, reaching into the nightstand to pull out a handgun and flick off the safety. He raced out, and she reached over to turn on the light on her side of the bed.

When the alarm finally stopped shrieking, she shook her head to clear it and slid off the mattress, quickly dressing. The silence was just as deafening as the alarm had been. It was probably nothing. An animal or Aidan coming in drunk.

She moved to the door to peer out into the night, leaping back on a strangled scream when a face peered back at her. She turned on her heel to run, tripping over the leg of a chair when the glass of the balcony door shattered behind her.

She rolled to face the door, not wanting to leave her back exposed, eyes darting for anything close enough she could use as a weapon.
