She would need to get the drive away from DiMarco, hand it off to Brogan to download the files, and slip it back into DiMarco’s possession without him being any the wiser. Entirely doable if Declan didn’t freak out and blow her cover.

At least the planning of this job had kept her mind off Declan’s lips and free of any thoughts about how much she wanted to kiss him again. Mostly. In any case, for the next few hours she needed to focus on the task at hand.

When headlights slashed across the trees, she straightened, pushing thoughts of Declan to the back of her mind. Aidan insisted that DiMarco, a creature of habit, would drive through this quiet neighborhood of McMansions to get to the fundraiser the mayor held every year for his biggest donors. Which is why she’d parked her Maserati on the gravel shoulder, popped the hood, and waited.

Hitting the remote to cut the engine, she dumped a bottle of water on the hot metal so it hissed and steamed just as a black town car crested the hill. She stepped out from behind the car so the headlights illuminated her in the dark.

The royal blue dress she’d bought fit like a dream, clinging to every curve with a slit up to her thigh and a plunging neckline that showed off the swell of her breasts.

Cocking her hip to expose the pale length of her leg as the car slowed, Evie pasted on a relieved smile when the rear window rolled down.

“Oh, thank goodness you came by,” she called without crossing the road, “I’ve been out here for I don’t even know how long.”

“Have you called someone?” DiMarco’s voice was a rich baritone with a lyrical Italian accent.

“I would, but my battery is dead. Do you have one I can borrow?” She bent slightly at the waist to expose more of her cleavage and bit back a smile when his eyes dipped down to her breasts and back up to her face. Christ, men were so simple.

He reached into his coat pocket and held a phone out the window, waiting for her to jog across the street. “Where are you headed in such a beautiful dress?”

“Oh.” She feigned shyness at the flattery and dialed the number for the burner phone Declan had given her. “Some event in Center City.” She offered him a smile and took two steps away to pretend at privacy.

“Hello?”

She smiled at Declan’s voice in her ear. “Hey, I’m broken down on Fremont just past the turn off for…” She twirled her finger in the air as if she couldn’t think of the word.

“Bishop’s Corner,” DiMarco offered.

“Bishop’s Corner!” Evie shot him a winning smile. “And I need you to come get me.”

“It’s a little unnerving how good you are at this.”

“Two hours?!” She turned slightly away from the car and hissed loudly, “What are you even doing that it would take you two hours to drive out here? You know what?” she snapped. “I don’t want to know who you’re with.”

She ended the call on Declan’s amused chuckle and stalked back across the road to hand the phone back to DiMarco.

“Everything all right?”

“I…” she blew out a frustrated breath, pressing her fingers to her temples. “I’m not sure. You wouldn’t happen to know the number for a tow truck service, would you?”

He made a show of checking his watch, glancing back at her, eyes traveling up and down her body again. “You said you were going to an event in Center City?”

“Yeah. A fundraiser for the mayor?”

“Well, then.” For the first time, he flashed her a disarming smile. “I think we might be going to the same place. I can give you a ride if you like.”

Evie reached out to squeeze his forearm. “Oh, really? You are a lifesaver. Let me grab my bag and just…” She waved a hand at her car.

He nodded. “Of course.”

After she retrieved her bag from her car and lowered the hood, she slid into the back of DiMarco’s black Lincoln, letting the slit from her dress ride high on her thigh before closing the door and plunging them into darkness.

“I really appreciate you helping me out like this,” Evie said, angling her body toward his as the car rolled away from the shoulder. “I’m Victoria, by the way.”

He took the hand she held out and leaned down to press his lips against the backs of her fingers. “Andrea. I’m glad I could be of assistance, Victoria. You know the mayor?”

“Well, my father does. He’s forever worried I’m not rubbing elbows with the right people, so he asked me to come tonight in his place. You?”

“I make sure to always rub elbows with the right people.”
