“We’d like two tickets toThe Resident,”Hunter said.

The movie theater employee tapped on the screen in front of him. After checking it over for a second, he frowned and said, “Looks like we only have a few seats left in this showing and they aren’t together.”

“Really?” Hunter asked.

“Yeah,” the ticket guy said, swiveling the screen around so we could see it for ourselves. “There’s a seat on row J and another right behind it. But that’s the closest I could get you.”

“Dang.” Hunter looked at me apologetically. “Guess I should have ordered the tickets earlier after all.”

“Do you want to pick a different show?” the ticket guy asked. “Or wait until the next showing at nine fifteen?”

“What do you think?” Hunter asked me. “Does anything else look good?”

I scanned the list again. The only shows that would be coming up in the next thirty minutes were rated R—which I wasn’t allowed to watch—or little kid movies.

“I’m not really interested in any of the other movies,” I said.

“Do you want to come back for the nine-fifteen one then?” Hunter asked.

“I have to be home by eleven, so I don’t think I’ll have time to watch that.”

Hunter sighed, seeming disappointed that things weren’t working out for the movie. He turned to the theater employee and said, “I guess we’ll just have to try again another night. Thank you.”

“Sure,” the guy said. “Enjoy the rest of your evening.”

“So what should we do now?” I asked as we walked toward the exit.

“If you’re still in the mood for a movie, we could go back to my house and watch something there,” he said. “My parents are at a charity event tonight, so it will be just us…”

Just us, alone at Hunter’s parents’ house?

Um, why hadn’t he mentioned that option earlier? Because watching a movie alone with Hunter—where no one would be watching us, and I could relax and sit close—maybe, just maybe a kiss might happen.

“Let’s do that,” I said, the words coming out a little too eager.

“You like that idea?” he asked.

I nodded. “Yes, that sounds great.”

“Is therea particular movie you’d like to watch?” I asked Scarlett as we rode the private elevator that would take us up to the top floor of our building. “You know, aside from that Justin Banks one we were too late to see.”

“I’m kind of in the mood for a classic. MaybeYou’ve Got Mail,” she said, biting her lip as she met my gaze. “Does that sound okay?”

“That sounds good.”

I squeezed her hand and tried really hard not to read into the reasons why she would suggest a movie we’d both seen a dozen times.

Well-loved movies were the perfect set up for doing other things. You already knew the movie well enough that you usually didn’t mind missing parts if you suddenly got distracted by something…

I shook my head.Don’t get your hopes up, Hunter.

Just because Scarlett agreed to a date and we were going to actually have some time where we were finally, completely alone without other eyes around to report our every move, it did not automatically mean that she was planning to kiss me again.

I needed to just chill and be okay with whatever happened tonight, instead of setting myself up for disappointment.
