Not most of the guys I’d met, anyway.
“…she says to a high school guy,” Hunter narrated in a sarcastic tone. I realized he thought I was including him in that generalization.
“You know I wasn’t saying that about you.” I gave him an apologetic look. “Like, we both know that if any guycouldbeThe Confidant, it would be you.”
Seriously. With how helpful he’d been withDear Eliza, I was pretty sure he could take the reins from me and be every bit as good asThe Confidant.
Maybe even better, actually, since he was just amazing and insightful like that.
“Well, it’s good to know that you find me superior to all the other high school guys that you know,” he said with a wink.
Normally, I wasn’t a fan of the whole flirtatious wink thing, but from Hunter?
Yeah, it was hot.
But I was pretty sure he could be rolling around in a puddle of mud right now and I’d still find him overwhelmingly attractive.
And I have a date with him tonight!Eek!
Sure, I was slightly paranoid that my dad would somehow find out tonight was a date instead of just two buddies hanging out, but I hadn’t looked forward to something like this for sooo long that even if I did get in trouble, it would be worth it.
“So you’ve narrowed down your suspects’ list to include only the female population at our school,” Hunter said, narrowing his green eyes at me. “But have you figured out what grade she’d be in? Aside from being at least a sophomore?”
“Most likely a senior,” I said with a shrug.
Again for maturity level reasons.
“Ever wondered if it’s a teacher?” He arched a dark eyebrow.
Hunter had nice eyebrows. Dark and just the perfect size and shape for framing his beautiful face.
Eyebrows were probably a weird thing to be attracted to. But I loved his and how he was always so expressive with them.
Like how he’s looking at me right now, like I’ve completely zoned out.
Which yep, I’d gotten so distracted by his handsome face that I forgot what we were talking about.
“What did you say again?” I asked, feeling a little sheepish.
The half-smile on his face told me he knew he’d just dazzled me again. “I just wondered whether you’ve ever considered a teacher actually being the mastermind behindThe Confidant.”
Oh, that’s right.
“I’ve never considered that,” I said before I could get distracted by the slight dimple showing on his face. “But that would be kind of hilarious. And also a really big possibility, since it’s definitely someone more mature than a lot of the kids at school.”
“Might need to add all the teachers’ names to your list then,” he said. “And maybe also consider a few of the morematureguys, too…” He winked again. Man, he might need to stop doing that if we wanted all the people on the subway to think we were just two friends headed home on a school break.
“Let me just get my notebook.” I pretended to pull a notebook and pen from my invisible backpack and jot down a list of names.
He asked, “Do you think anyone is wondering about whoDear Elizais in the same way you wonder aboutThe Confidant?”
“I hope so,” I said, forgetting my imaginary list of suspects and looking up at him. “Because if we can cause as much of a mystery around that and make people wonder who she is, we might have a chance at dethroningThe Confidant.”
He looked like he wanted to say something about my plans to dethrone the advice-column queen, but then the subway pulled to a stop and there were suddenly a dozen people getting on and off the train.
I turned my legs to the side to let people pass by. The subway doors closed again, and we were just about to head to the next stop when Hunter noticed an elderly woman standing a few feet away, looking for a seat.
I glanced around to see if there were any available spots, but all the seats were taken.
