“It’s no problem,” Slade said.

He picked up the mug, then pushed past Flash’s legs with intentional aggression. Flash grunted, then found Cassandra ... Cass ... peering at him like lasers cutting through the snow.

“Did you tell him?” she asked.

Flash had opened his mouth without a clue about what he was going to say. It was then he noticed a beam of light cast itself over Cass’s frame, then began flicking on and off like an electric light trap for mosquitoes. There wasn’t a road close to them other than the one that went the opposite way, and the lounge was on the other side of the house entirely.

“What’s wrong?” Cass asked.

Flash rose from the couch, stepping to the window behind her. It was only a few feet from her, so he caught her scent again, that lemon and captivating vanilla. It would have been enough to send his lips to hers again. Sneaking in a little tongue before Slade got back with the coffee would have been sexy and daring.

If it wasn’t for that light that caught his eye and made his heart beat in his chest rapidly beyond his attraction to the enchanting demon hunter sitting before him, he would have. Instead, he pushed at the thin drapes and narrowed his wolf focus at the window, searching through the trees for activity.

Lo and behold, almost a mile away, sat a car with its lights on. The lights flashed, washing everything around the car in tones of yellow and orange. The average human would have cast it aside as fireflies, maybe even a light catching from a distant road. But Flash had impeccable vision, and what he had initially feared had come to fruition.

“What is going on, Flash?” Cass said, sounding more worried.

“Someone followed us.”

Chapter9

Slade

After Flash informed him about their visitor, Slade glared out the window, using his keen eyesight to focus on the van. He was sure the occupants of the vehicle didn’t know they were being watched. Even though he wanted a better look, he held back from moving the curtain.

He was worried that Flash might do something impulsive ...when didn’t he... but to Slade’s surprise, Flash didn’t make any sudden moves. He’d half expected his friend to throw the curtains aside and point at the van, screaming,I see you!

“Can’t see much,” Flash said, tilting his head to see through the edge of the glass frame.

“I know,” Slade muttered, frustrated. He and Flash were far enough back from the glass that even if those in the van were shifters, they most likely didn’t know they were being observed.

If they weren’t shifters, then they didn’t have to be careful at all. Humans would be easy to stalk, and in Slade’s opinion, trying to sneak up on shifters this way would make the humans look like they had suicidal tendencies.

“I don’t want to just sit here and wait for them to attack,” Flash muttered. Slade’s anxiety rose a notch as he anticipated having to restrain his friend. It didn’t matter if there was a ten-foot tentacled monster in the van. Flash would go after it as if he were invincible.

Cass moved across the room so she could peek through the gap in the curtains without being seen. Slade admired her calm, smooth movements. She was completely self-assured and confident, like the best fighters always were. She barely disturbed the air as she walked like a ninja that could appear and disappear at will.

He couldn’t help admiring her other attributes too. Her slow movements made him notice her long, sleek thighs, supple waist, and firm breasts. For a few seconds, he forgot they were in potential danger and watched the low light in the room cascade over her golden hair.

“Hey, bro,” Flash snapped. “You with us?”

“Yes, of course, sorry,” Slade said. Obviously, Flash had been speaking for some time, and Slade had been completely out of it.

How can I help myself? Look at her.

“The lady was talking,” Flash muttered, disgusted. Slade shook his head, amused. Cass turned, and he could see her eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief.

“I said that the van is probably tailing me,” Cass said.

What a nice tail it is too.

“It could be to do with the demon hunting. I definitely piss off a lot of groups with that. Or it might be because of my hack job at Phar-Scape. Who knows?”

“But you don’t think it’s here for us?” Slade asked. She shook her head.

“Have you guys ever had any issues being followed before you brought me home?”

“No,” Flash said, looking out the window again. “No one would fucking dare.”
