She braced one hand against it and reached through the bars, angling the pin into the lock. Cass was beginning to worry that she would be too late to help her lovers.

That is a demon army out there. No matter how strong my boys are, they are totally outnumbered.

She twisted the pin, fighting the panic rising in her as she thought of her beautiful men being injured in the fight before she could get there. Her chest became tight as her imagination served up a variety of scenes where they could be permanently injured or even killed.

Are they even still alive now? Am I too late?

Suddenly, the door to the cell swung open. Cass jumped back, eyeing it suspiciously.

Doors don’t just open.

Glints of red began to wink into existence in the darkness. Shadows lumbered, and feet dragged on the floor. A menacing growl came from the darkness, a sound of pure threat.

Cass took a step back, then another. Suddenly, the main lights switched on right above her head.

Demons!

The room was full of them. All of them were disgustingly ugly, as well as big and powerful. She looked over their ranks in fear, terrified for herself and for her wolves.

Now I’ll never get to them in time!

Her next thought was even more hopeless.

No weapons. No gear. Just me, standing here in front of a demon army.

Cass set her chin and glared at the oncoming demons. She planted her feet and raised her fists.

If I’m going down, I’m going down fighting.

Chapter22

Flash

The fight had been brutal, but Flash, Slade, and Jenny finally managed to cut through the lines of oncoming demons in their attempt to get into the Phar-Scape building.

Flash felt a thin thread of telepathy between himself and Cassandra, and it was shared by Slade. She was in trouble, and he knew they had to get there as fast as they could.

As they approached the lobby of the building, a crowd of possessed humans tore through, heading for the front doors. Slade cursed, urging them back. All of them were brave but not dumb enough to walk straight into a meat grinder.

“What do we do?” Flash asked, looking at the others. “Any ideas?”

“Follow me!” Jenny cried. To Flash’s shock, she led them away from the building.

“Jenny, what are you doing?” Slade yelled. “We can’t run away.”

“We aren’t,” she said, shaking her head. At the back of the building, Jenny bent down, running her fingers over the edge of a manhole cover.

“Clever,” Flash said, winking at the girl. She winked back.

Jenny managed to get her hands under the cover just as the footsteps of the demons pounded toward them from the corner of the building. Before the creatures could see where they were going, all three had slipped into the sewer, and Slade dropped the cover above them.

“Now what, genius?” Flash asked. His voice held respect and warmth. The longer the fight went on, the more impressed he was.

I hope Slade can see her the same way.

When he glanced at his friend, he saw a look of complete admiration on his face, tinged with something like pride. Slade would always worry about his baby sister, but tonight, for the first time, he was seeing her for the incredibly powerful woman she was.

“This way,” Jenny said, hurrying through a dark corridor. She whispered under her breath, and Flash realized she was counting her footsteps. After they had gone a short distance, Jenny looked around above them until she found a manhole.
