Except keep following them, keep having amazing sex … keep falling in love?

Chapter18

Cassandra

Leaving the mall, the two guys were quiet to the point of awkwardness. Cass tried to invite them for food or ice cream, but both just grunted. She was becoming extremely frustrated by their behavior ... surely, they could take a little constructive criticism?

The problem was their reactions immediately made Cass feel like giving up. They were both powerful, complicated, and gorgeous, and she was a difficult woman that was impossible to love.

On the way home, she racked her brain for a way to get the conversation going again and eventually went back to shop talk.

“So, have either of you got a plan for tonight?” she asked, using her toughest professional voice.

“Yeah,” Flash muttered. “Find Crenshaw, single him out of the crowd, and interrogate him.”

“Might want to go with a bit more finesse, there,” Slade said. “Why don’t we have a drink with him or something? Just see if we can get him talking?”

“I like that idea,” Cass said, trying to give encouragement so the guys would keep talking.

“Why, is my plan too angry?” Flash snapped, taking the bait. Cass sighed.

“If you really want my opinion, maybe it is,” Cass snapped right back.

“Honestly, I don’t think that dragging the guy into a straight-backed chair is the best way to go,” Slade said.

“Yeah, well. You just want to go to see if your sister is there,” Flash muttered sullenly.

“Shut your mouth!” Slade yelled, twisting the wheel of the car as he turned to look at Flash. Cass, in the back, was thrown around a little as Slade gained control of the car.

“Who’s hungry?” Cass asked. “Come on, I’m starving. Let’s go through a drive-thru.”

Even though the guys responded with sullen glares, Slade pulled into a fast-food joint. They ordered burgers, fries, and shakes, and then Slade got back on the road toward home.

“Thank you for the dresses,” Cass said, trying a new tactic. “It’s very sweet of you.”

“My pleasure,” Slade said. She could tell by how he caught her eye in the rearview mirror that he wasn’t just talking about the sex. Buying her pretty things had genuinely given him joy.

“Will you help me pick one out? I’m not sure what to wear.”

“I’d love to,” Slade said. “But Flash is somewhat of a fashion buff.”

“Really?” Cass asked, giggling.

Flash shrugged. “I may admit to having watched a few fashion shows in my time. I’ll have a look and help you choose.”

“I don’t know how formal this gathering is,” Cass said thoughtfully. She took a long, hard sip of her vanilla shake. “And I think I should fit in, you know, for the cover.”

“Absolutely,” Slade agreed. He turned the car onto their street. “We don’t want you dressed in red if everyone else is in gray.”

“Have you guys got suits?” she asked. Flash laughed.

“Quite a few,” he answered. “Luckily, a suit fits in everywhere.”

Slade rolled up the driveway, stopping the car before going into the garage. There was a flurry of activity for a few minutes as they picked up their food and Cass’s dresses, then headed inside.

Cass went straight to the living room, settling on the couch as she devoured her fries. She felt like this situation had gotten too emotionally charged, and she needed to manage the guys’ expectations on this.

The only reason they reacted the way they did was because they felt like there was too much at stake. I need them to understand it’s not going to be like that.
