“It’s photography. What could he possibly know that Eden doesn’t?” Jonah asked.
“I don’t know. What other jobs have you had?” I asked.
“Whose looking for a job?” Adrian said, sliding into an empty chair beside me at the table.
“Eden,” Sloane answered.
“Oh. Have you ever waited tables?” Adrian asked.
“I have,” Eden nodded.
“Are you any good?”
“I only waited tables for seven years.”
“I’ll take that as a no,” Adrian said.
Eden laughed.
“Since you laughed at my joke, I’ll give you a chance. I’m looking for more help with summer hours about to start. Interested?”
“Uh, yeah,” Eden said. “What are summer hours?”
“We expand our hours during the summer season and open for lunch. Right now, we open at three. Starting next week, when the boaters really show up, we open at eleven. And I’m looking for another person to come in and work the ten-thirty to three-thirty. Not a lot of hours, but you’ll have chances to pick up more when someone else calls out.”
“I think it’ll work for now. Do you want to interview me?”
“Show up tomorrow at two-thirty. Your interview is working a shift. We’ll go from there.”
“You just need another server tomorrow, don’t you?” Jonah said, laughing.
“That’s neither here nor there,” Adrian grinned. “Sound good to you?” he asked Eden.
“Yeah, that’s good.”
“Awesome.” Adrian tapped the table. “Now, you’re not illegal, are you?”
Eden laughed. “Not that I know of.”
“Don’t give him pity laughs,” I said.
“Those aren’t pity laughs,” Adrian said, “I’m hilarious.”
We all laughed.
“Sure you are, bud,” Jonah said.
“Adrian.” The voice behind me stilled my heart.
I took a massive gulp of my gin and tonic while Adrian and Camden shook hands.
“Hey man,” Camden said. “Thanks for inviting me.”
Adrian was the one responsible for this? Camden wouldn’t have ever shown up to a trivia night without the invitation. And he’d invited my enemy on purpose, knowing I’d be here. I gave Adrian the stink eye, but he wouldn’t meet my eyes. But no matter how charming and handsome, I had to keep my guard up with Camden. He’d almost made it through my defenses at the bakery, and now I had to remain vigilant.
“Great game, guys,” Camden said, standing next to me. “Ms. Hart, you’re quite the competitor.”
“She takes her trivia seriously,” Adrian said.
