“So I hear you’re a hero,” Sloane said.
I shook my head. “No, it was Finn who saved both of us.”
Adrian smiled, and again it was an odd sight. A complete change of demeanor from the night before.
“You came back and stepped into the situation. Not many people would do that,” Adrian said.
“That’s cool of you,” Jonah said.
“Thanks,” I said. I’d earned the respect of Adrian.
“I wonder why they did that?” Sloane asked.
“They were looking for some woman,” Adrian said.
“And the fact they didn’t say why didn’t sit right with me,” I said, then took a bite of the raspberry pastry. Oh man, the explosion of tart and sweet hit the spot.
“Agreed,” Adrian replied. “If I found her, I wouldn’t tell them.”
“That’s scary. Wherever she is, I hope she’s okay,” Sloan said, shrinking back into her chair.
“Hey,” Jonah leaned forward, “It’s okay.”
“Yeah, we got your back,” Adrian added.
“I know. Thanks, guys.”
She seemed shaken up by this situation, and she didn’t even have a gun pulled on her.
“More coffee, anyone?” Lauren sidled up to the table.
“None for me, thanks,” Jonah said, “I have a worksite to check in on.”
“What do you do?” I asked.
“General Contractor.” Jonah stood. “It was good to meet you.”
“Yeah, you too,” I said, but my attention was back on Lauren and her sweet smile.
She said farewell to Jonah, then turned to me. “More coffee?”
I nodded. “Yes, please.”
Lauren poured the coffee. “Everyone’s telling me about your heroic actions.” Her fingertips skittered down my forearm, sending electricity jolting through me.
“I wouldn’t go that far,” I said.
“That’s not what I heard,” she said. “How scary to have a gun pulled on you.”
“Well, thankfully, that didn’t last very long.”
“I’m glad you guys weren’t hurt.”
“Oh, it was nothing.”
“Sure.” She rubbed my bicep. “Well, thanks for being there.” And with that, she was across the room, refilling someone else’s coffee.
Adrian’s eyes had narrowed on me. Great.
