“There.” She looks far too pleased with herself. “Now, no matter how hard he tries, there’s nothing left in you to fertilise.”

My hand goes to my abdomen, reflexively, a sudden worry gripping me. “When I said only Jack’s child, I didn’t necessarily mean only one of his children….”

She rolls her eyes and then turns her attention back to the gardener.

A broken cry echoes behind me, and I know he has to start over again.

“Don’t worry, you’ll get them back.” She draws her hand up, and the tree grows until those apricots rise to the height of my abdomen. I can guess what’s inside them instead of pits.

I look at the other trees around us, dotted with fruits and flowers….

Ester spares me a sidelong glance. “Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to.”

With one last glance at the apricots, I nod to Ester—I will not thank her—and head back to Jack.

New Rules, Old Foes

Minoka appears the moment Jack summons him, the scent of that same brimstone following faintly after and I have to huff out a breath to clear my nose of it.

Jack insisted on setting a scene before the trickster god returned to his domain.

Sitting on his throne, with me in his lap, Jack has slouched to the side, chin resting in his hand. But the set of his jaw and the narrow glare he rests on Minoka give away his tension.

Minoka looks as though he doesn’t have a care in the world.

“Let’s make our deal.” I point him toward the chair that sits in front of and beneath Jack’s throne, but he only stands beside it. He doesn’t sit.

That’s fine.

Jack squeezes my hip as I take a deep breath and prepare to offer my new bargain. “In exchange for gaining Heim’s favour to satisfy Juun’s requirements, you will have one try to get me pregnant.”

He shakes his head, ears flopping against his face. “I get one kid, no matter how long it takes.”

“No.” I stare him down. I’m not willing to give him any ground on that. “I won’t be trapped here because you want to play your games and hurt us.”

He watches me carefully, “Fine. I get one night.”

One night could last an eternity.

“You can have one mortal realm night.”

When he smiles, I know it’s too open ended and I clarify. “Eight mortal hours as they would pass in the Valley.”

His nostrils flare and it looks like he might argue, but he nods. “I will agree with one caveat….”

“I’m listening.”

“I have you as many times as I want. Without interferences. And,” His gaze drops to my mouth. “I would also like to come on your pretty lips.”

“Define interference?”

“Your bunny can’t get tetchy when you like my cock more than his.”

“That isn’t going to happen.” Jack won’t be upset, because I’m not going to prefer his. But I need to word this carefully. “You will not be refused without just cause.”

Eyes narrowed, he looks between us and then nods. “It’s a deal.”

“Not so fast.” Jack says from behind and above me. “I have requirements as well.”
