That just gets me his grin. “I should have guessed. I mean, it runs in the family.”
“Your family,” I point out and his face pales. “Look, Raylee would have known by now if she was having twins. Relax, take a breath before you faint.”
“Da, do what you have to do. None of us are going to mourn her loss. Mary and Gareth are too young to understand and Chloe hates her more than the rest of us.”
Ain’t that the fucking truth. But it shouldn’t be this way. My kids shouldn’t hate their ma.
“What she did to Callie—” He shakes his head. “If it were anyone else who did it, Jerry, Butcher, and Maverick would have sorted it out.”
I’m still coming to terms with the fact she’s connected to most of the criminals in Ireland.
“Call Raylee, get her on a flight.”
He nods. “I’ll give Makenna a call too, she’ll want to be here.”
I scoff. “She’ll want to dance on her grave.” My sister has always hated Zoe. From the moment she met her, Makenna took an instant dislike to her. The two of them were always bitching at each other.
“She won’t be the only one,” he says with a grin. “Instead of the wake, it’ll be a fucking party.”
“I won’t be long,” I tell him as I reach for my car door.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you?” he asks hesitantly.
He doesn’t want to come, but he’ll do anything I ask. I’m proud of him, he’s a good man, and he’s going to be an amazing father. Just as Danny is. As much as I hate the cunt, Zoe gave me six beautiful, amazing children.
“No, Mal, go on home.”
He hesitates for a second. “Are you sure?”
Am I sure I don’t want my son to watch his ma die. Hell fucking yes. I give a shit about my kids. I wouldn’t ever want to fuck them up and watching what’s going to happen will certainly do that. “Go,” I instruct him.
I watch as he walks back into the house, his shoulders hunched, and his phone to his ear. No doubt calling his woman. Just as he enters the house, Maverick storms out, his eyes filled with rage. Even though he and his sister are twins, they look nothing alike.
“I’m coming with you,” he grunts. “You don’t like me, I don’t give a fuck. You broke my sister's heart. For that alone I should kill you.”
“Maverick, the only reason your arse is still alive is because of your sister. Keep pushing and I won’t hesitate to put a bullet in you.”
He shrugs like he doesn’t give a fuck. Psycho bastard. “I’m coming,” he reiterates.
I unlock my car, and he slides into the passenger’s side. I’m not going to argue with him. I get it. When Holly was taken, I was there when Romero let loose on the bastard who took her. He wants closure and revenge. I’m not going to stop him.
“By the way, I don’t hate you. My sister loves you for some fucked up reason. She’s carrying my niece or nephew. That makes you family.”
Jesus. I start the car and pull out of Jerry’s drive. I’m now stuck in this fucking car with him for the next hour. Great. Just what I bloody need.
“Callie loves you, but she’s also very hard-headed. She says she’s done. It’s going to take a hell of a lot of work to get her to come around.”
I grit my teeth, that’s not what I want to hear.
“She’s been hurt before—”
“I know,” I snarl, remembering what she told me about her abusive ex.
“Yeah,” he growls. “I guess she told you about him putting her in the hospital.”
My hands clench around the steering wheel. No, she never told me that.
“I’m guessing she didn’t inform you he tried to kill her?”
