“Oh, you’re just mad about me finding out what you were up to when you came to town.”
He laughed. “Nah, competing with you was fun.”
I glanced up at Jonah, who rolled his eyes and grinned. Those two still seemed to get off on competing. I was more than happy to no longer compete against anyone and settle into a quiet life of writing and making love to my husband.
Jonah’s hand grazed further up my thigh to my butt, where he found it bare. He wasn’t aware that I’d worn a thong and I knew his mind was now on what, if anything, I had on under this dress.
I glanced up at Jonah, batting my eyelashes. He stared at me with one eyebrow raised.
“What is going on back there?” Lauren asked.
“They’re flirting, babe,” Camden said, glancing into the rearview mirror. “This car’s filled with so much sexual tension that soon there’s not gonna be any room for us. We need to get to Lou’s, pronto.”
“Oh, you two are ones to talk,” I said, giggling at Jonah’s light touch running along my thigh.
“What are you talking about?” Lauren laughed.
“Shall I give examples?” I asked.
“No, there are no further questions,” Lauren said quickly.
That was what I thought. “Just let me be happy,” I said, taking in the sparkle coming off the gem on my finger in the flashes of passing light.
Jonah brought my fingers to his lips and kissed them. Then, he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine.
“We’re here,” Camden said, turning off the highway into the parking lot of Lou’s and the Marina. “Thank god.”
“Dude, chill,” Jonah said, getting out of the car and holding his hand to help me out.
“Nice lipstick. The shade looks pretty on you,” Camden quipped.
I pulled a tissue from my bag and wiped my lipstick off Jonah’s lips.
The restaurant was almost dead as they neared closing time. A handful of people sat at the bar, and Finn glanced over at the door as we walked in.
“Hey guys,” he called, flipping through the television channels.
“Where’s Adrian?” Jonah called.
“Kitchen, I think,” Finn called back.
We headed across the restaurant, and I saw Adrian from behind in the swinging door window. “Guess what?” I called, pushing through the door holding up my left hand.
Adrian jumped back and away from something. A flash of red hopped down from the counter…Eden.
They both stood six feet apart, panting and beet red.
“Oh my god,” Lauren and I both said.
“What the hell is going on in here?” Camden asked.
“Nothing,” Eden said, panic filled her voice.
“Let me get this straight,” I said, pointing at Lauren and Camden. “You two were getting freaky in the bakery kitchen.” I turned and pointed at Adrian and Eden. “And you two were getting freaky in this kitchen. I don’t wanna hear another word about Jonah and I.” I threw my hands in the air.
“What’s on your hand?” Eden asked, coming toward me. “Oh, my goodness… Is that?”
“We’re engaged,” I yelled.
