“Why wouldn’t you come with me?”

“My family and life are here, and you expect me to uproot everything?”

“It’s an adventure,” he said. “You’ll get out of this town you’ve been in your entire life.”

“So, you’re not planning on staying.”

“I don’t know,” he said. “All of this is hypothetical.” Why the hell was she thinking this?

“Then, why am I the only one hypothetically following you? What about my career?”

“I have the better job,” he snapped. “Hell, Violet, you could do whatever you wanted. Why is this even an argument?”

“You’re assuming that I will pick up and go with you without talking to me,” she said. “This won’t work out.”

“It’s all hypothetical… And why not?”

“Maybe I shouldn’t be in a relationship that I have to hide and ostracizes me from my colleagues.”

“They’ll come around. It’s not that big a deal.”

“They won’t, and companies don’t make people sign waivers stating that they won’t sue them when it isn’t a big deal.”

“Do you want to end it now?” he asked, aware that the threshold to appearing desperate was fast approaching.
