Not taking advantage of them, just because he knew he could get away with it, but rather thinking about them and doing more to bless and encourage them.
From somewhere in the back of his mind, the Bible verse about iron sharpening iron flitted across his mind. Even if nothing happened between Orchid and him, he wanted to be friends with someone who challenged him and made him think. Who made him be a better person.
And he wanted to be that for her as well.
“Are you sure you don’t want Paisley to hang out with you guys today? I’ve already told her she could have the day off, but she said she’d be more than happy to take the kids off your hands if you guys were actually planning on a date or something.” Peyton’s words came to his ears as he finished shaking Bryce’s hand.
She’d been talking to Orchid, but Orchid shook her head.
“I think Powell was really looking forward to getting to play with other kids. And Dwight’s actually very good with her. He just has a knack with children. I think Owen and Kendrick will have a good time. And it will be nice for Paisley to have a break.”
“I’m sorry. I’m a little nervous because I hardly ever leave Owen alone, and I love Kendrick. I’m just worried. Ignore me.”
“Perfectly normal. You just took a big step, so you have that, along with the idea that things are changing a little bit, and you’re doing something you don’t normally do by leaving Owen. I promise we’ll take great care of him.”
“Thank you.”
Bryce had moved a step closer and put his arm back around Peyton, drawing her to his side. She went willingly and stood as though she was made especially for him.
Dwight figured there were probably people who were meant for each other who didn’t fit together beautifully, but Bryce and Peyton did.
His fingers tingled just a little, and he knew it was because he longed to hold Orchid. To see if she melted into his side the way his friend’s wife fitted perfectly into his.
Or maybe he just longed to have someone who loved and respected him beside him.
Funny, when he thought like that, it gave him a great desire to be a man she deserved. To grow and become better.
Friends.
He wanted to be a good friend to her. That was where it started. Miss Charlene hadn’t led him wrong yet, and he was going to assume that she wouldn’t.
