What am I getting myself into?

I straightened the papers, despite my doubts, and filled out my information. I’m hesitant to put down my previous workplace. Will they call and check for references? I don’t want anything here linking me to my past. I can’t hide it. I know everything will be out in the open soon anyway. I’m just not ready for the two to meet. The life I’m attempting to build here is mine and mine alone. The past will find a way to ruin it.

My head whips around when the front door bangs open. My jaw drops as a stunning woman strolls through. She has long black hair, bright green eyes, and a confidence I can only dream of having.

The man following behind her is otherworldly. Blue eyes look at me curiously. His blonde hair is shaggy on top with bright blue tips. He’s huge. And beautiful. And scary.

“Hello.” The soft words tear my eyes from the man. “You’re new.” She stops feet away, watching me curiously.

“I’m filling out paperwork,” I say dumbly, pointing to the bar. If I were ever to be with a woman, it would be her. She’s stunning.

Wait, did I just say that?

“Oh, you got a job here. I heard about the waitress quitting. Is Ryker around?” She looks around.

“Ryker?”

“You haven’t met the owner yet?” she asks. I shake my head. “He’s great. You’ll like him.” A snort comes from the man. “Blue, hush.” She looks at him lovingly.

“I met Tristan and Bash.”

“Right, where are they now?” she asks.

“Upstairs, I think. Supervising construction, it sounds like.”

She looks intrigued. “Huh, that doesn’t sound like them at all.”

“Ryker? Construction? No way would he get his hands dirty,” Blue says dryly.

“What’s your name?” the woman asks.

“Serenity.” I hold out my hand politely.

“Harmony. And this is Blue, my mate.” She doesn’t ignore my hand as Bash did.

“Nice to meet you,” I say shyly.

She lets go of my hand to reach for her phone when it beeps. She suddenly bursts out laughing, looking from her phone to me and then back at her mate.

“Excuse us for a moment. Ryker needs to speak with us.” She smiles kindly, grabs Blue's hand, and walks away.

Have I entered the twilight zone?

I’m waiting so long I’m tempted to look around, to investigate. Any fears of this place have disappeared. They are a bit odd but don’t seem dangerous, at least to me. I can’t wait to tell Ava all about this. Thinking about her, I pull my phone out to let her know I got the job and to not expect me home soon. Bash didn’t even tell me my hours, so that will have to be enough information for now. Maybe after I get answers later, I can take a moment to give her the details. I won’t try to explain to the people here over the phone. That’s an in-person kind of conversation.

The heels clicking across the floor brought my attention away from the bottle of tequila I was staring at behind the bar.

“Sorry about that. Ryker had to tell me something.” Humor sparkles in her eyes. “I can’t wait for you to meet him.” She sits in the seat beside me.

“Is he busy? I can wait. Is my job dependent on meeting with him?”

“He’s finishing something up. I gather that the job is yours.”

“How do you know him?”

“We’re friends. He helped me with a situation I had a few months back. Many misjudged him, but he’s a great guy. I’m excited for you to get to know him.” She goes behind the bar to fix herself a drink. “Want one?” She shakes the bottle at me.

“No, thank you. I assume I will be working soon. Did you say Blue was your mate?” I’ve heard the word but usually in regards to animals.
