There was a hallway to the right that probably led to the sleeping areas.

The main room had a partitioned area with a simple kitchen with human goods like a microwave, fridge, and dining table. Plus an oven that looked old-fashioned.

“They are used to human visitors,” Sam said. “Hell, they welcome it.”

“But they bond to each other,” I said.

“And outsiders,” Sam said. “And anything that will screw them. They bond, take your magic, and—”

“By share magic, you mean?” I asked.

Sam glared at me, lifting his taut jaw. “What did he tell you?”

“More than you have,” I muttered.

“I’ll get us food,” he said. “You can lie down if you want to.”

I watched him, his broad shoulders and back straining that white tee shirt, his ass in those jeans, just taking him in.

He really was gorgeous.

“Stop staring, wolf,” he muttered, opening the fridge and not even turning to look at me.

If it weren’t for that damn mouth…

“I’m going to take a nap,” I said, darting into the kitchen to grab an apple from a fruit bowl I’d noticed.

Sam just ignored me and continued to pull things out of the fridge. “I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.”

The hall split in two directions, probably heading to bedrooms at either end. I picked one direction and strode down the hall to a small room with a bed covered in pink silk with green silk pillows. The walls were a gentle cream. No windows.

I fell back on the bed, letting out a sigh of pure relief. It was soft. We were safe. Sam was cooking.

Everything was fine for the moment.

I closed my eyes and almost drifted off to the sound of trees rustling above the house. But then I stirred, jarred by the sound of voices.

It was Os talking to Sam.

I sat up, listening intently.

“Griffin’s making food,” Os said in a voice he was clearly trying to keep quiet. “Where’s Cleo?”

“Sleeping,” Sam said flatly. “What do you want?”

“That thing in the cage. Is it… you know, what we’re looking for?”

I didn’t hear Sam say anything in response.

“You know we have to find it. It’s the only reason the celestials are putting up with you joining us on patrol at all.”

“You know damn well I can pull rank on anyone who questions me.”

“You know what I mean, Sam. We all know why you’re here. This is important. This is the safety of the whole world we’re talking about.”

“I know.”

“The Morningstar—”
