Griffin stood with my help as Sam came forward, still shirtless but wearing loose black pants.
His dark eyes met mine, flashing with hints of gold. “No one was hurt before I got here?”
I shook my head, looking at the others.
“Where did they come from?” Sam asked.
I flushed. “I went for a run, in wolf form.”
“I thought as much,” Sam said. “I had hoped to avoid them…” He shook his head. “The elders won’t be happy about this. They like the minotaurs.”
I raised an eyebrow at that, but Sam just shrugged.
“Well, pet? They didn’t hurt you, did they?” His tone was casual, but unless I was imagining it, his eyes were actually concerned.
All that bloody violence, had he done it for me?
I considered it only for a second, then laughed inwardly. No way. If he hadn’t loved killing so much, if it had in any way inconvenienced him, he probably would have sent me to them himself.
What were pets for if not being useful, after all?
But he was still watching me, tall and shirtless and still, waiting for my answer.
“I’m fine,” I said, nodding.
Sam nodded back quickly and then walked over to one of the logs, motioning for Os to join him.
As Griffin came to my side, the two angels put their heads together and began discussing something quietly.
“Come on. Let’s go upstream a bit,” Griffin said. “Away from all the blood. I’m going to throw up again.”
Probably a good idea, though, for some reason, I hated taking my eyes off Sam.

Griffin held his head as he sat on a log facing away from the stream, where all the blood was slowly diluting into the water, any traces of Sam’s bloody fight disappearing.
“The way he just slaughtered them… like they were nothing,” Griffin said, shivering slightly.
“I saw him kill before too,” I said.
“How?” Griffin asked, deep-blue eyes filled with horror.
“Right through the head,” I said, and Griffin went even paler. “Never mind, let’s not talk about it.”
Griffin nodded. He looked over at Os, who was listening to Sam intently. “What do you think of the other angel?”
“Os? He seems nice,” I said.
“Really nice,” Griffin said, giving him a dreamy look.
“And you’re going to be his pet?” I asked. All of this still seemed surreal.
Everything moved so quickly.
A part of me still felt like, at any moment, they’d all call me a worthless omega and I’d be shipped back to my pack to be stoned again.
Even if I was never punished, I’d die a slow death in that town on someone’s leash.
