“That means no,” Mor said with a laugh. “I like her. She’s got spirit. She’ll make a good pet for Sam.”
“Are we really just going to allow this?” Os asked. “A person as a pet?”
“What else can we do?” Mor asked. “What Sam wants, Sam gets. I can’t even remember the last thing he wanted other than to bloodily kill things. We should give this to him.”
“Is anyone going to even ask what I want?” I yelled at them, rolling over again. “I’m the one most affected by this.”
Gabe sneered as he walked over to me. “You’re just a worthless sinner who can’t even obey the gods. You deserve death, and—”
“That’s my pet,” Sam said, pushing the door back open as he entered again. “I wouldn’t speak to her like that if I were you.” His words were calm, but the ice in his eyes promised death.
I screwed up my brows. The last thing I needed was this executioner angel defending me. I’d seen him shish-kebab Zane. The guy wasn’t normal. At all.
Gabe looked like he wanted to make something of it but stepped back. “As you wish, Samael. But we’ll be keeping watch. And when we meet up with you again, I expect a report on her training.”
“Training?” I asked.
Gabe ignored me. “If she truly isn’t serving us, and if I hear about anything weird that might hurt our reputation with the locals, I’ll find a way to kill you myself.”
“You and what army?” Sam retorted. Then he turned back to me, his brown eyes gleaming with gold at the centers. “So what’ll it be, pet?”
“She has to wear that suppression collar at all times,” Gabe said.
“Which one?” Sam asked.
“The one suppressing her demon. You can take it off if you’re in need of her powers, but when this is over, when we’ve found… what we need to find, you will have to kill her, as you would any demon.”
Sam just nodded.
So much for helping me.
And what was a succubus? I wasn’t very familiar with demons and hadn’t heard of that type.
“You can take off the wolf collar,” Gabe said. “When you’re in certain territories, it might be best if she had a lupine appearance.”
Sam nodded.
“And leash her,” Gabe said meanly.
Sam nodded again. “She’ll be a proper pet.”
“Only Sam would think to do this,” Mor said, shaking his head. “But all right. We must get to the pack bordering the fae wilds soon. I have to get out of this stupid armor.”
Os nodded. “I hate when they make us dress up.”
I had no idea what to say to that, so I just listened as they got together in a cluster to discuss a few more things, then started to head out.
“Good luck with the pack leaders,” Gabe said to Sam. “How are you going to explain this?”
“I’ll just tell them I’ll be punishing this unruly omega much worse than death while she’s with me.” He grinned. “That should satisfy their bloodthirst.”
The angels nodded and left, and the jail only held Sam and me.
“What’s a succubus? What do you mean I’m yellow and common?”
He gestured to my collar. “You can’t see it, but your collar is special, used only by celestials to detect certain types of demons. It’s our job to remove demons from celestially blessed communities, after all. The cabochon is made of brimstone, and it turns colors based on exposure to demonic power.”
“And mine is yellow, so I’m a succubus?”
