“Died three weeks ago.” Leo states, taking another bite of his omelet.

How is he not done with that thing yet?

“How?” Madden asks, closing the file to my father’s case, just in time too because the waitress comes back with his food.

“Shot in the chest at his wedding.” Leo shrugs like he just said the most casual sentence in the world.

“He got killed at his wedding?” Madden asks, his voice low and only heard by us.

Leo nods, while I take the file on Emilio’s death out.

“He was shot with an automatic reloader, which is owned by Ronaldo Morales.”

It was Leo’s idea to kill Emilio at his wedding, and it was mine to pin it on Ronaldo.

That was part of the reason why I was at the estate the night before the wedding. Yes, Isabella was my priority, but with Ronaldo occupied with his guests, it gave me an opportunity to sneak into his office.

I knew exactly what gun I was looking for, so as soon as I found it, I put gloves on and took it. When Ronaldo would come back to his office, he would notice nothing.

Now we are just waiting for the Castro family to come after us. It’s only a matter of time.

“I’m not even going to ask how in the hell you are able to prove that the gun belongs to him.”

I shift throughout the papers until I find what I’m looking for.

“He did all the work for us. The one and only weaponed registered to Ronaldo Morales in the state of Texas.”

Madden takes the registration from me and scans it over.

“This registration is from the late nineties.”

“When Ronaldo wasn’t very well known as a cartel kingpin.” Leo finishes the thought.

The reason why we chose this gun to shoot down Emilio. It’s the only one that ties Ronaldo to the crime.

Because even in Texas, known members of the cartel, mafia or gangs aren’t lawfully able to carry.

“Fuck.” Madden scrubbing his hand over his face.

“Now you can add murder to his rap sheet.” Leo says, leaning back and placing an arm on the back of his booth.

Madden continues to look at all the evidence that we have handed over to him. All so that he could take Ronaldo down.

“I’m not one to ask if anyone has a moral compass, I’ve done my fair share of heinous things, but I do have to ask this. What happens to the cartel once Ronaldo is taken down?”

He looks straight at Leo when he asks the question since that decision is going to fall on him.

“I can’t very much tell you that the Cartel is going to continue, can I? Whatever is decided that’s between me and my brother-in-law here. Not you. But I can promise you this, you won’t find another file on the Muertos on your desk after this.”

If Madden isn’t shitting his pants right about now, he should be.

Surprisingly he nods. “I can get behind that.”

He collects all the paperwork that we just handed over and folds them so that the files fit inside his jacket pocket.

Madden throws a few bills on the table and stands up. “I’ll reach out if there’s a development.”

And with that he leaves the cafe.
