My brain has always worked like a computer. I analyze and process information, turning out integrated solutions to complex problems that most people don’t think of.

Simplify.

It’s always been my method.

So many people look for ways to make things harder, even if they don’t realize that’s what they’re doing. Often, the simplest answer is the best one.

The thought of Belle’s surprise – hopefully, it’s a picture of her breasts – has me in a favorable mood, so when my last meeting of the day walks into my borrowed office, I greet him with a smile.

Well, as much of a smile as I’m capable of.

I’ve always been good at reading people, but whether or not I choose to make accommodations for their feelings is another story. But for my Uncle Dennis’ sake, I’ll do it now even though I’d normally up the ante with this chump.

“Hi, Max. Please, sit down. Listen, we got off on the wrong foot earlier. I understand your concerns about my uncle’s retirement and having someone you don’t know or trust taking over. You’ve been part of the team a long time, and I’ve heard from my uncle that he really values you. So, let’s get to know each other better and quell some of your concerns.”

Max is still frowning, but when he sits across from me, his shoulders are more relaxed.

“Are you planning to restructure?” he asks.

“I would imagine, yes. Outside eyes can always find efficiencies. But the first things I’ll be doing are listening and observing. I won’t make knee-jerk decisions without knowing what the hell I’m talking about. And I’d like you to be part of my process, not my adversary.”

“The team has been through so much change. Your uncle already did several restructures.”

“It’s the only constant, right? I’m not looking to fire a bunch of people. I’m sure there will be some turnover. Employees will leave because they don’t like me, and others will want to be hired because they do. But I want to make sure people are in roles that make sense and that we’re doing work that matters.”

“There are a lot of rumors about you, Adam.”

“Some of which are probably true, and others are likely very exaggerated. But I’m not a fan of dealing in gossip. How about you get to know me and make your own assessment?”

“Fair.”

“Walk me through your pillar,” I say. “I’m most interested in the current five-year plan and your perspective on what’s working well and where you’re not getting traction.”

If there’s one thing that Max is passionate about, it’s numbers. He becomes flushed and animated while explaining to me what his team does and, basically, why I shouldn’t fuck with them. He’s defensive either because he’s old school and doesn’t like to be scrutinized, or he’s trying to hide something.

I don’t know which yet.

But I will figure it out.

Some executives don’t know the details of what happens in their worlds on a daily basis. But Max does. He isn’t just a figurehead at the top of the finance world. He understands the business and wants to be involved.

He answers my questions, but his posture turns defensive whenever I challenge him. He wants me to take him at his word and doesn’t want me to dig, which means I’m getting a bigger shovel. I don’t like secrets.

And if anyone was taking advantage of Uncle Dennis’ distraction while he was sick, then I’m going to end their lives.

I have a lot more experience dealing in blood than accounting.

And I don’t need a jungle to make sure they’re never seen again.

“Thanks for your time, Max. It’s been really insightful. If I have any follow-up questions, I’ll send you an email.”

“Goodnight, Adam.”

And now it’s time to check on Uncle Dennis and then get a surprise from my princess.
