I stare deep into her beautiful blue eyes that glisten with tears. “It would ruin my life to loseyou. Not to lose a job. At this point, it’s a given that the latter is happening. I’m fired without a doubt. But you’re safe, and we’re together. I’ll figure out something else to do. Firefighters have lower standards, so I’m sure they’ll accept me.”

Rebecca groans. “Only you would have a firefighter joke right now.”

Grant comes up behind us and rests a hand on my back. “As your boss, I have to tell you that what you did tonight was wrong on every level except the one that matters – the personal, moral one. As your friend, I’ll tell you that I would have done the same damn thing.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Grant, though the circumstances could be better. I’ve heard so many great things about you,” Rebecca says.

I’m impressed as hell by this woman. She tried to sacrifice herself to save me and is now being kind to my boss after the hell she just went through.

She’s the strongest, bravest person I know.

“It’s nice to meet the girl who has Wyatt all wrapped up, and can actually make him take a day off.” Grant gives her a wink. “I’ll arrange to have a lawyer sit with both of you while you give your statements. And don’t worry about your job right now, Wyatt. I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this situation goes down as it should. You saved her life.”

“Yeah, but my record shows that I break rules, even if I do save lives. This newest offense just proves it’s a pattern. That’s what the big bosses will say.”

“Don’t write yourself off just yet,” Grant says. “I’m going to help make sure you’re not stuck fighting fires for a living.”

Even if I do lose my job, what I did was worth it and I’d do it again.

A job will never stand in the way of protecting what’s mine.

Matt has regained consciousness and is screaming obscenities as the cops lead him out of the room.

“You’re all fucked! My dad is going to bury all of you! And, bitch, I promise, I’m going to fucking kill you next time.”

“Your dad isn’t going to save you this time, buddy,” I tell him. “And you will never get near Rebecca again. I’ll cut your fucking heart out if you try.”

“You’re going to be the one who gets arrested and then fired!” Matt screams. “They aren’t going to do shit to me!”

Chapter 24

Rebecca

“Youshouldhaveletme kill him.”

Wyatt chuckles, but I’m completely serious. Matt is a piece of shit, and the world would be better off without him in it.

We’re driving back to Sunnyville in a rental car even though we should have stayed an extra night. Wyatt is pretty badly beat up – first the task force fiasco and now this one – and we’re both exhausted.

But even more than both of those things, we want to put Vegas in our rearview. We’ll rest better at home.

Grant arranged to have an excellent lawyer at the station to support us, and his presence helped to ensure that the Vegas PD focused on building a case against Matt versus Wyatt.

But I still have doubts – major doubts.

“Testifying against Matt isn’t going to do shit,” I continue. “Nothing ever happens to connected people like him.”

The time spent reliving every detail of what happened with the Vegas PD is likely to be a total waste of time. But on the bright side, Wyatt didn’t get arrested, though he is on paid suspension while Grant figures out what happens next with the higher-ups.

Wyatt shouldn’t have broken into the house and risked everything, but I’m sure glad that he did.

“Thank you for saving me. Have I said that yet?” I ask.

“Only about eight hundred times,” Wyatt returns. “And thank you for saving me.”

“You would have gotten him. But I enjoyed smashing in his skull.”

“Babe, you have a serious violent streak, and I kind of like it.”
