"What has Naomi told you?"Malin asks.
"Nothing. She gave me a key to a safe deposit box and told me if anything happened to her, I needed to release it secretly. Directions to do so are in the envelope."
A line forms between his eyebrows. "Naomi didn't give you any indication what was in it?"
"No."
"What bank is it at?"
"One in Belize City."
"Which one?"
Why does he care?
My gut twists. "Is there a reason you need to know?"
Something shifts in his expression. "Just curious."
He's lying. A pang shoots through my heart. Another person who thinks I can't handle the truth.
I thought he would be different.
Once a fool, always a fool.
"What happened after she gave you the key?"
"She left to talk to Ezra and never came home. Two men broke into my apartment and abducted me. When I got to the jungle, she was there."
"Did she make it to work before Santiago's men kidnapped her?"
I didn't tell you who Ezra was.
Did I mention the station?
No.
"How do you know Ezra?"
Something changes in his expression.
Is it guilt?
"I didn't say I knew him."
"I didn't tell you Ezra was Naomi's boss."
"I just assumed. So, did she make it to work?"
Okay, it's not far-fetched. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions.
I breathe through my nose, trying to remain calm, but my chest tightens. "I don't know. I didn't think to ask."
His silence adds to my anxiety.
