Andre nods. "Okay, then. You're officially on gun duty while I'm showering."
"See you later, green eyes," Axel mumbles and squeezes my shoulder.
"Be safe," I respond.
Andre tells us he's going to lock all the doors and windows.
"I'll wait here until you give Penelope your gun," Axel tells him.
"Is Zoe okay?" Naomi asks.
"Yes. I think—"
Andre comes into the kitchen and hands me his weapon. "I need to shower. Are you familiar with this type of Glock?"
"Yep." I flip the safety back and forth and smile. "All set."
He raises his eyebrows in surprise but chuckles.
"Make sure you stay inside," Axel orders.
"We will."
"Don't let anyone in the house."
"We won't."
Axel stares at me for a moment.
"What?"
He takes a deep breath. "Nothing. I'll be back soon."
"Okay."
You can kiss me goodbye.
He smiles. It's the same one he would give Naomi or Zoe or any of the guys.
My heart drops. It shouldn't bug me, but it does. The way he normally looks at me makes me feel special. And I don't like him giving me the same expression he gives everyone else.
Axel leaves. Andre re-enters the room then Zoe.
She says, "Let's make some dinner. It'll be nice to have something besides snake."
"Snake?" Naomi asks.
"Yep. Dirk has a thing for snakes."
"He does pride himself on his ability to hunt those suckers," Andre confirms.
She snorts.
"It's protein," Naomi offers.
"A good rattlesnake can taste like tilapia," Andre insists.
"Feel like I've been eating chicken forever. Let's see what Tinker has for us to make." Zoe opens the fridge.
