Her eyes are bright green but not like Penelope's. She could be auditioning for an alien role in a movie.
Tinker whistles like he's a construction worker.
"Don't whistle at my woman," Dirk barks.
He holds his hands up. "Can't help it if I appreciate a good-looking woman."
Zoe pats Tinker on his cheek. "You, my dear, have zero standards."
"I have been told that before." He winks.
She spins and sits at the table. "Well, now that I look like a freak show, when are we leaving?"
"Tinker's going to contact his friends to help us with border issues. Either tonight or tomorrow, depending on when they get back," Dirk says.
I rise. "But we're leaving now." I pull Penelope up.
We exchange our goodbyes. Penelope and Zoe hug. "Thank you again. I know this is a risk for you," Penelope says.
"Just find your daughter," Zoe tells her.
Penelope nods and blinks hard.
Zoe hugs her again. "I'll see you in Bermuda. I hope Millie and I can sing together when you get there."
She wipes her face. "Me, too."
"Stay safe," Dirk says.
I fist-bump the guys. Dirk and I exchange a glance.
We've just added another layer of danger to our journey. Hopefully, we're making the right choice by leaving now and not waiting around until Tinker's friend in Omoa can get his new supplies.
Dirk and I are used to putting it all on the line. But we've never done it with our women before.
"See you on the other side, brother," I tell him.
He nods. I suddenly have an uneasy feeling. But the ticking in my head continues, and I don't have time to stop and analyze anything.
