I kiss the top of her head and hold her against my chest again. She's still trembling. Goose bumps cover her skin. I grab the blanket next to me and wrap it around her then murmur, "Drink some water then try to sleep. We have a long drive."
She tilts her head. "Where are we?"
I lie, knowing she's going to flip out and fight me when she finds out what's about to happen. "Far from the city." I open a bottle of water and hold it to her lips. "Drink. He drugged you. The best way to get it out of your system is to stay hydrated and sleep."
She doesn't argue, drinking almost the entire bottle. She takes a deep breath then leans into my pec, mumbling, "I still hate you."
"No, you don't," I reply, but I wonder if she really does.
"I do," she insists then closes her eyes.
I kiss the top of her head again then watch her fall asleep. My phone vibrates. I pull it out of my pocket and glance at the screen. Dante's name pops up, but I throw him into voicemail, not wanting to listen to him lecture me or try to talk me out of what I'm about to do.
A text appears.
Dante:Where are you?
I sigh, contemplate what to reply then type my response.
Me:She's safe. No one knew I was there.
Dante:I asked you where you are.
Me:On my way to the airport.
Dante:Why are you going to the airport? Where the fuck are you?
Me:All you need to know is I have the situation handled. Go back to your party.
Dante:Gianni, what are you about to do?
I sniff hard, taking a few moments to respond. My twin brother knows me well. We have a connection that only the two of us can understand. It's his engagement party, and I feel guilty for not being there, but this is more important.
Me:Doing what I should have done a long time ago.
Dante:Jesus. What the fuck does that mean?
Me:Making her mine.
He tries calling me again, and I send him to voicemail.
Dante:Goddammit! Answer the phone!
Me:There's nothing you can do, brother. Go back to your party. I'll let you know when I'm on my way home, but it's not going to be anytime soon.
Dante:You're making a mistake.
I snort.
Me:Is Bridget a mistake?
Dante:Don't even try to compare Bridget and me to what you're about to do.
Me:Seems like a similar situation to me.
Dante:No. It's not.
Me:Mind your own business. This conversation is over.
