I get on my tiptoes, peck him on the cheek, and then stroll through the house and down the stairs. When I get to the lobby, Massimo is on his phone.
His hand is in his hair. He's staring out the window. The muscles in his shoulders flex with tension. He snarls, "It's too much of a coincidence. I'm not letting you play me anymore, Katiya."
My instinct is to make sure he's okay. I've never heard of Katiya before. I don't know the situation, but he sounds so upset. I fight the urge to stay and figure out what's going on. Instead of eavesdropping, I step into the den so I don't hear any more of his conversation. Then I sit on the couch and wait for Gianni. A few minutes pass. He sticks his head through the doorway. "Ready?"
"All set," I reply, standing.
He puts his hand on the small of my back and guides me outside to the SUV. We get in, and the driver shuts the door.
Gianni rolls the divider window up. Once it's completely shut, he tugs me onto his lap. "I want to tell you something."
I raise my eyebrows. "What?"
He strokes my cheek. "Every moment of this week was amazing. Watching you in action, all I could keep thinking was, that's my wife. I'm so proud of you."
My heart soars. I've always loved Gianni, but this past week it's only deepened. I adjust myself so I'm straddling him and lace my fingers around his neck. "I love you, baby."
"I love you, too, tesoro."
My smile grows so big, it hurts my cheeks. "I have something to tell you."
"Oh? What's that?" he asks.
My butterflies flutter fast in my stomach. I've thought about how to tell him all week, but I don't know the best way or when. Silvio scheduled my ultrasound for tomorrow, so I'm out of time. "Do you remember when you said you were ready to give me kids?"
He smirks. "We can start trying tonight if you want."
I lean closer. "We don't need to try."
He opens his mouth then closes it. He peers closer at me. "Are you...?" His eyes grow bigger. "Are you pregnant?"
My emotions take over again. Tears well in my eyes. I nod. "Yes."
"You are?" he asks, as if I'm not telling the truth.
"According to Silvio."
Silence fills the car. Gianni's eyes never leave mine. Ten seconds pass, and he puts both palms on my cheeks. "We're having a baby?"
I suddenly worry that maybe I misunderstood things. Perhaps he isn't ready for one. My smile falls, and I reply, "Yes. Are you not happy?"
He jerks his head backward. His voice goes up several octaves. "Are you kidding? Cara, we're having a baby!"
I cautiously question, "So...you're happy?"
He pulls me to his lips. "Tesoro, you just made me the happiest man on Earth."
"Really?"
"Yes!" He kisses me then retreats. "Wait! Silvio knew about this?"
"Yes. He gave me a test a week ago."
"A week ago!" he exclaims.
I bite my lip and wince. "Sorry. I asked him not to tell you."
Dark pools swirl in Gianni's eyes. "Why?"
