Agnello was being pushed into a corner. I was sure his desperation would breed mistakes.
It was only a matter of time.
Now all we could do was play the waiting game.
Everything was going along as planned, yet I couldn’t help but feel like something might happen soon. Only, I didn’t know what that was.
Konstantin came up to me with a book. “Can I sit with you, Uncle Mikki?”
I smiled and pulled him to my lap.
I watched as he opened the book and began reading silently to himself before letting my eyes roam over to Damien, playing with Dmitriy.
Catalina was asleep in his room.
I didn’t even think she slept much last night, and I knew it had everything to do with how Damien had been keeping his distance.
“I can feel your eyes on me, you know,” Damien said drily, not bothering to look up from his spot on the floor.
“Wasn’t trying to be inconspicuous,” I replied.
He let out a small sigh. “Well, stop it. You look at me any harder, and I might blush.”
I rolled my eyes. “What’s your problem?”
“I don’t know what you mean,” he answered casually.
“Don’t play dumb.”
He let out a sigh. “I think we had a similar conversation before. But it was when you had your head buried in your ass.”
“Yeah? It’s fu—out now.”
I looked down at Konstantin. Having kids around was taking some time to get used to.
Damien smirked.
“Perhaps you shouldn’t make my mistake. You’re hurting her.”
He let out a small sigh. “I’m trying not to hurt her.”
“You really think you’re without control?”
His teeth ground against one another. “No, I don’t think I’m without control. But I could lose it. With her. You know how easy it is to get lost in her.”
I frowned. “Is that what you’re worried about? You’re scared you’re going to lose it with her?”
He didn’t answer me. He looked down at Dmitriy when he held up a Lego piece from what he was building. Damien placed the piece on top of the castle model.
I opened my mouth to say what, I didn’t know, but I didn’t get the chance. I heard some shuffling noise, and Catalina came out, her hair a mess from sleep, her hands rubbing her puffy eyes.
Fuck, she was adorable.
I turned to Damien to find him staring at her with rapt attention.
Yeah, I didn’t think him trying to keep his distance would last long.
Not when he could barely take his eyes off of her.
