Another slap, then another. She closed her eyes and gasped with each spank. Her poor buttocks were delicate from the day before and the pain seemed to gallop to a crescendo within a few seconds of her punishment starting.

“Oh, oh, Gunnvar,” she whimpered. “No more.”

“I’ve barely started,” he said by her ear. “And if you’re such a good shield maiden you’ll find the courage to take what you’re owed.”

He started up again, striking her bottom with the flat of his hand.

She went up onto her toes, trying to escape the pain blooming. But it was no good. There was no escape.

He kept on going, putting pure Viking muscle into each slap.

Tears welled in her eyelids and over-spilled. Her belly tensed and her lungs ached with each sharp gasp that tore through her throat.

“Please, no more. I’ll do as... I’m told.”

“I don’t believe you.”

Slap! Slap! Slap!

“Oh... oh... Gunnvar.”

He paused. “Do you understand how disappointed I am with you?”

“Yes. I do. I promise I do.”

“And that you will do as I say when I order you to keep safe.”

“Ja. I will.” A sob gurgled up. “I really will.”

He spanked her again, just as hard as before. “I’m making sure.”

She switched her weight from one foot to the other. “No more.”

And then it stopped.

He was close, his chest rubbing on her arm as he caught his breath. She was weeping, her cheeks wet and nose running. Her buttocks were on fire; it was as if real licks of flames were fanning over them.

He released her head and she lifted her cheek from the tree. She was sure there’d be bark imprint on her face.

“Are you sorry?” he asked.

She nodded and closed her eyes.

“Say it.”

“Sorry,” she muttered, gingerly touching her buttocks.

He was quiet. It felt like a long, deadly pause and she opened her eyes to look at him.

“Maybe not sorry enough.” He wrapped his arms around her waist and spun her so her back was against his chest. Using his boot, he knocked her feet hip-width apart.

“What are you—”

A blaze of fire went over her mound.

He’d slapped her there.
