He had only taken a couple of steps when I stopped him. “Hey, Derek?”
“Yeah?” He turned back to us.
“I think Emily might still be here. I’m sure she would love some company.”
Derek only nodded his head, then practically ran away from us.
Waiting until Derek was gone, I turned out of Grant’s embrace and gave him a grateful smile.
Grant stuffed his hand into his pockets, but I wished he’d put them back on me. I was always wishing for his hands to touch me, for him to be with me like we were before…
Putting that aside, I said, “Thank you for the rescue. Truthfully, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing.”
Grant chuckled. “No problem.”
“What are you doing here, anyway?” I finished walking to my car and basically threw all my shit into the back seat.
“Oh, I wanted to find out if you and Abby would like to get some ice-cream.”
“The same parlor we went to a while back?”
“The very same.”
My smile bursted free. “Aren’t you tired of us yet? You’ve been spending almost every moment of your free time with us,” I half joked.
“No,” Grant stated firmly. “If I could spend more time with you guys, I would.”
We stared at each other. The implication of his words had my heart racing, and my body filling with need for him.
Breaking out of the spell, I replied, “Abby loves spending time with you, you know?”
His smile was wider than I had ever seen in my life.
“I’m sure we can handle some ice-cream,” I said, my smile mirroring his.
We agreed to meet at his apartment in half an hour as I needed to pick Abby up and drop off my pile of work.
Driving out of the school parking lot, I looked into the rearview mirror and saw Grant still standing there with that grin on his face. My heart melted and fell right at his feet.
It wasn’t long until I pulled into my driveway, walking in and calling for Abby.
My mom sat at the kitchen island, and asked, “What’s happening?”
“We’re going to ice-cream with Grant.”
“I take it things are going well, then?”
“Yes,” I breathed. “They’re going better than I thought they would. Grant is wonderful with Abby. Mom, seeing them together nearly brings tears to my eyes.”
My mom reached a hand across the counter and patted my own. “I’m happy it’s going well. Although, if I’m honest, I’m skeptical about you two getting hurt.”
“I know, but I don’t think I can stop Abby or myself from falling for him even if I wanted to. That makes me worry, especially for Abby.” I sighed.
She gave me a knowing look. “Things will work out however they’re meant to work out.”
“Mommy!” Abby came running in, effectively ending our conversation.
Attempting to tuck away my worrisome thoughts, I picked up my daughter and gave her a big hug. “Hey, baby. Say, do you want to get some ice-cream with Grant?”
