“I hope so,” Brandon says. “I want to be that kind of leader.”

“You’re already that kind of man.”

He gets to his feet and pulls me up beside him. “Come on,” he says. “Let’s go home.”

“Do you think you can find our clothes again?”

“Are you kidding? I’m the best tracker in this pack.”

“You mean youwere.” I grin. “I guess you forgot that tracking was always my skill set.”

“All right, then,” he says. “I’ll let you lead us, if you’re so confident.”

Well, now I can’t afford to be wrong. I have to impress him.

I let my wolf take over. She’s eager to perform for her new alpha, aware of his authority and anxious to please. At the same time, I feel her confidence in her abilities. I can track anything. My own scent will be as easy as exhaling.

And honestly, Brandon’s will be even easier.

I find the clothes in no time. It’s child’s play to follow the route we took last night—the heady scent of our wild arousal still hangs thick in the air. When I reach the pile of clothes, I sit down beside them and nudge them lightly with my nose, showing off for Brandon.

He nods his satisfaction, and I feel the little thrill that comes with pleasing an alpha.

We get dressed quickly. “Home?” Brandon asks.

I look to the east. The sun is starting to rise.

“My house first,” I decide.

“Your house?”

“I want to get Emmy,” I say. “It’s time you got to know her as your daughter.”

Brandon lights up at that. “Yeah?”

“Are you ready for that?”

“I can hardly wait,” he says. “Let’s go.”

BRANDON

Aliciaholdsafingerto her lips as she leads the way into the house. “The others might still be sleeping,” she whispers.

Sure enough, the house seems dark and quiet. It looks like everyone’s still in bed. Alicia points me toward her room to wait and goes to another door, which I suspect must be Kayla’s.

“This is big,” I say. “I know I’m her father, but now she’ll know officially. Do you think she’s going to understand?”

“I think so,” she says. “She’s aware of fathers. I don’t think it’s ever occurred to her to wonder whether she had one herself. And there’s no one I’d rather have as the father of my baby.”

“Not even that Chad guy?” I can’t resist teasing her.

She socks my shoulder lightly. “Chad was never anything to her,” she says. “Even when we lived together, he wasn’t part of her life. He treated her like she was a pet or something. He was happy to look after her for me when I had somewhere I needed to be, and I could trust him to keep her safe, but he didn’tcareabout her.”

“He sounds like an asshole.”

“He wasn’t quite on Lonnie’s level, but he was definitely a waste of my time.”
