“Come here, my boy. Let me see your arm.” As best as I could with my enormous belly, I leaned down to him and inspected his arm for invisible bruises and scratches. “I bet one kiss from Mama and it’s gone.” And I kissed his elbow a dozen times, then continued kissing up his tiny arm making him giggle. “Does it feel better now?
Blaine nodded as he wiped his tears away, then turned to Sam. “I’m sorry, Daddy.”
Sam picked up the boy in his arms. “That’s okay. Daddy still loves you.”
Behind his big daddy façade, Sam was just as soft and tender to the kid as I was. And the boy was a sucker for daddy’s coddling.
“Hey, Luc.” Dora came into the room holding a fussy toddler in her arms followed by her husband Robert. “I think Phoenix is ready for his lunch.”
“He’s always hungry, Dora. Blame that on the delicious meals your son cooked for his mama when she was pregnant.” I took the toddler into my arms. “I’ll feed him before coming downstairs.”
“Now Sam, why don’t you leave the boy with us and you go get ready with your wife. The others will be here soon.”
Sam lowered Blaine back on his feet.
“I’ll race you to the kitchen, Grampy.” The boy shouted. “One, two, three.” And he bolted out of the room, stomping his tiny feet.
“Go, Grampy, go race after him and make sure he doesn’t get hurt again.”
“Let’s hope little Phoenix and your baby girls take after your wife and hopefully are less energetic than Blaine. I’m getting old for all this running, you know.” Robert complained before scurrying to chase the boy, trailed by Dora shouting and commanding no running inside the house.
“Jeez.” Sam ran a hand through his hair as he shut the door behind them.
“Having regrets about wanting a big family?”
Sam met my eyes. “Never. The louder the house, the better.”
With one hand full with holding Phoenix, I attempted to remove my shirt with my one other hand.
“Let me help.” Sam came to my assistance, helping me remove my top and unlatching my bra.
The hungry toddler quickly found my breast and fed on it. All the while, I was conscious of Sam staring at me, specifically at my engorged tits.
“Go get in the shower, you horny man.”
“I’m always horny around you.” With a wink, Sam retreated to the ensuite and while he showered, I continued feeding Phoenix. He didn’t take too long to burp afterwards. Then I swayed with him in my arms and hummed him a tune until his eyes succumbed to his sleep.
After I placed him into his cozy cot, it was time for me to get ready in five minutes. The typical time allocated for any mother to get dressed on any occasion.
I choose a floral summer dress from the wardrobe. It was lightweight and the only garment that fit me just right.
I had just begun to undress my trousers when Sam returned to the room with only a towel wrapped around him. Goodness, either my hormones were raging, or this man just kept ageing like fine wine. Look at him. My very own living sculpture. And with those water droplets dripping off his hair onto his chest. Hm, yummy.
And Sam was staring back at me, at my near naked body. Except he didn’t have any raging hormones to blame. He was looking at me like he’d never seen me before. He always did. And every single time he looked at me like that, it felt the same as it did in his office while stealing flirty glances five years ago. It felt just right.
“I’m going to miss seeing you like this when they’re born. You’re so beautiful when you’re carrying my children. Did I ever tell you that?” Sam spoke with genuine adoration in his eyes.
“Every single day of every one of my pregnancies.”
“I do tell you that too when you’re not all chubby and wobbly.”
“Not as much as I tell you how handsome and wonderful you are to me and our kids. You’re a wonderful father, Sam.”
“I’m competing with my wife. She’s the perfect mother.” Sam kissed me sweetly before pulling my near-naked body into his own and we just stood there embracing one another, enjoying each other and the rare stillness around us.
The peaceful moment ended as soon as we heard Luna’s chirpy voice from downstairs. “Where’s my little brother? Ah-ha, I see you hiding, Blaine Boy and I’m coming to get you. Rawr.”
And silence was no more as Blaine and Luna shouted and screamed and left stompy footsteps all over the house.
