“You’re looking thoughtful,” Trev said, hoping the other shoe wasn’t about to drop.

Leanne smiled. “I suppose I am. The first time I asked you to be my third husband, I admit it was a line. We discussed the possibility briefly over lunch, and you moved in. We’ve been really solid as domestic partners, so I’m asking again, this time for real. How about it, hon? You and me. We can catch the next plane to Vegas.”

Is she seriously proposing?

He stared, unable to figure out how he should answer. “Are you sure about this?”

“Totally. We get along great, and I need to be in a stable relationship to do well in the polls against Dan Rutherford.”

Oh right. It’s all for show—a piece of paper that makes her more appealing to constituents.

Even so, he didn’t hesitate because being Leanne’s housekeeper and fake husband was still better than living in his parents’ basement. He wouldn’t let himself hope for more; taking one day at a time had gotten him this far, and all his instincts insisted this was the right move.

Taking a deep breath, Trev nodded. “Pack a bag. I’m down.”

Chapter 11

Since Leanne believed in striking while the iron was hot, she booked plane tickets for the next day.

The mayor might be pissed about her calling out on a Friday, but she didn’t want to see his lying ass. He’s probably all blotchy from the hex and scratching his way through the interview. That made her laugh as she clicked through a few more purchases: hotel room and a wedding package that included everything. Trevor should enjoy the trip at least—and frankly, she would too. If nothing else, this would be a fun, whirlwind vacation.

Quickly, she texted Danica:You owe me. I need a ride to the airport, no questions asked. I’ll explain everything when I’m back. Deal?

The reply came immediately.Absolutely. What time should I pick you up?

Leanne:Nine should be early enough. Ride or die.

Danica:Don’t you mean fly or die?

Leanne tried not to, but she laughed. If only you were as funny as you think you are.

Danica:See you tomorrow.

She only glanced up from the text exchange when Trev kissed the side of her head. “I’m going to bed now. What time are we leaving tomorrow?”

“Be ready by quarter to nine. Danica is driving us to O’Hare.”

“Does she know where we’re going…and why?” he asked.

Leanne shook her head. “I’m not telling anyone until it’s done. My friends mean well, but I don’t want to hear that I’m being reckless. I have a plan, and you’re an important part of it.” That wouldn’t win her any awards for Most Romantic Proposal, but it had the chief virtue of being completely true.

Trev pretended to wipe a tear. “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

He turned toward the guest room, but she stopped him with a hand on his forearm. “Hey. Do you plan to insist on separate beds even after we’re official?”

Laughing softly, he covered her hand with his. “Does it seem like I’m playing hard to get? Guess it worked. I was hoping you’d put a ring on it.”

“Wait for it,” she teased.

Though she expected to be too full of nervous energy to sleep, she fell into dreamland right away and didn’t wake until her alarm went off at eight. She took a long shower and did her hair up in a casual but elegant chignon. No need for makeup—magic took care of that. She packed her favorite royal-blue duffel with care, checking her closet for wedding dress options. Wearing virginal white was out of the question, but maybe…

She pulled a cream swing dress out and held it up. The fabric packed well and would look gorgeous after being hung up overnight, pure vintage charm with a sweetheart neckline, a fitted bodice, and a skirt that begged for a swishy petticoat. This will do.Leanne added the perfect pair of shoes and accessories and, as an afterthought, put in some sexy lingerie along with the rest of her clothes. Then she ordered the swing underskirt to be sent to their Vegas hotel.

If I’m getting married, I’ll dress for it.

She checked everything in the condo one last time then led the way to the elevator. “Are you nervous?” she asked.

“I should be.”
