Chapter 26
I’m sleeping with Titus. In someone else’s bed.
It was a standard full-size, which meant it wasn’t quite long enough for him. Wrapped around Danica like he was, Titus didn’t seem to mind. He kept stroking her in innocuous places as if he couldn’t quite believe she was here.
Frankly, neither could she. But she wasn’t sorry about the grand gesture, even if she’d come across as impulsive in a big way.
“No idea what we’re doing tomorrow?” she whispered.
“None. Susan keeps calling it a ‘super fun surprise,’ so I really don’t know what to expect. I hope it’s not an outdoorsy activity. None of us are used to the heat.”
“Since she’s pregnant, she’ll probably go easy on the physical strain,” Danica said.
“That makes sense. Hey…”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for freaking out over me. I’m apparently quite into this.” Titus laughed softly when she poked him.
“I’m never living this down, am I?”
“Sweet dreams,” he said instead of offering false reassurance.
There were still problems to be dealt with, and she doubted she’d heard the last of Gram, but she intended to look on this as a vacation from all those issues. It had been a long enough day that Danica drifted off at once, secure in his arms. In the morning, Titus was already gone when she woke up, understandable since he was on a much earlier schedule normally. From the kitchen, she smelled something delicious—
Oh my God, he made cinnamon rolls.
Her stomach let out a horrendous noise, but before she could follow the delectable aroma of cinnamon and sugar, Titus rapped on the closed door and then let himself in without waiting for a reply. Since he was holding a plate with a giant gooey cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee, made exactly as she liked it, Danica fell in love with him all over again.
“You’re incredible,” she said in a ridiculously airy tone. “How are you this perfect?”
If eyes could beam out hearts, hers must be doing that right now. Titus grinned, perching on the edge of the bed. “Now you’re just flattering me.”
“Have youseenyour pastries?”
Deliberately, he cut a piece of tender, steaming cinnamon roll, and the frosting trickled down over the soft inner roll. Danica moaned as he fed her the first bite. She considered insisting that she could feed herself, but it was more fun this way, eating from the fork he was holding. He passed her the coffee mug so she could sip when she needed to cut the glorious sticky-sweetness. She licked her lips, and his eyes heated, gaining a sheen that made them look almost like polished bronze. In the end, he fed her every bite, and it was almost like foreplay, even though he never touched her.
“Okay, so if I don’t leave the room now, I won’t let you get out of bed,” Titus said huskily. “And that—”
“Would be bad?” It wasn’t supposed to be a question, though it came out as one.
“Not bad per se, but you’ve made a fairly good impression on my family so far. I’d hate for them to decide that you’re a sex maniac.”
Danica grinned. “Even if I am one, it’d be best to leave that under wraps.”
“I’ll keep your secret.” He leaned in for the best evergood morningkiss, and she felt confident that any morning breath was well concealed by the sugar and cinnamon.
“Then let me get dressed and brush my teeth. I’ll be ready shortly.”
Since Danica didn’t know what they had planned for today and she’d already slept in, she hustled in getting ready. Grateful to Margie for packing a few decent outfits, she put on a cute summer dress in primary colors and added a filmy scarf to keep the sun off her shoulders. Her hair was a little wild from being left to dry on the pillow, so she dampened it and put it up, the best she could do without starting over. She brushed her teeth thoroughly, added tinted sunscreen and lip balm, then she hurried to the front room where everyone else was already waiting.
“I’m sorry. I hope we’re not running late.”
Susan shook her head. “Not at all. I hope everyone has fun today. This is one of my favorite places. It’s actually where Greg and I had our first date.”
Greg. Did I know Titus’s dad was named Greg?
“Greg and Susan” had such a sitcom ring to it. Danica made some noncommittal response as everyone piled into the gray minivan. Titus headed all the way to the back, so she followed him, leaving Maya and Lucy in the center, with Greg and Susan up front. She laughed softly as the powered doors swooshed closed.
