It’s a miracle that she wantsme.

Chapter 14

Danica splashed water on her face.

She had cleaned up, just as she’d said, but she was also battling a colossal wave of panic and regret. After making up her mind to stop seeing Titus, after castingtwospells to that effect, she’d just banged his brains out in his office. This is so out of control. It would be some comfort if the sex had at least been mediocre, but no, it rocked her world every bit as much as she’d imagined.

Dammit. What now?

Pulling herself together, she dried her face and donned a smile before heading to look for Titus. She found him still sprawled in the office chair, as if he were boneless. He’d straightened his clothes, even if his hair was still messy. The brightness of the smile he directed at her made her feel like shit.He thinks this is the start of something, not an impulsive mistake.Danica didn’t have the heart to address the issue. Not today, not right after such fantastic sex. Asking her to have that convo right now was both cruel and unusual.

“I wish I didn’t have to invoice you, but don’t get it twisted. It’s purely for fixing the register. Not for—”

“Other services?” Titus supplied smoothly.

“Exactly.”

He rose, taking her hands in a gesture so adorable that her heart quivered. “I hope you don’t provide this level of attention to all your clients.”

“I think you know that I don’t.”

“Then I’m special,” he pronounced with an absurd air of satisfaction.

If only you knew.

“Definitely.” Her mouth just loved answering before her brain caught up. “I have to run. Book club is—”

A soft kiss interrupted her, and she got lost in it for several dreamy seconds.I could live off kissing this man.Danica fell out of the daze when he traced a finger down her cheek.

“Have fun tonight. I’ll text you before bed.”

That sounded very…official, but from the glimmer in his eyes, it also offered all kinds of promise. Probably she should discourage him, but instead, she said, “Sounds good.”

“You know, I’m starting to think that weirdo did me a favor,” he said, smiling.

“How so?”

Is he talking about the dude who wrecked the register?

“He barged in here ranting about witches, and when I suggested he seek help, he…reacted badly. Big guy, tough-looking. British accent. If I had to guess, I’d say he has a drug problem and maybe a mental illness.”

Oh shit.

For several long seconds, she couldn’t even breathe. Titus kept talking, apparently not noticing her preternatural stillness. “Anyway, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. You fixed what he broke, and then we…you know. A bad day turned out great, thanks to you.”

I fixed what he broke…magically. And magic leaves a trail for those who know how to follow it.

If the stranger wasn’t deranged, this destruction could’ve been a trap. One I walked right into. She needed to purge the trail, but Titus would walk her out like a gentleman. She had no excuse to linger alone in the front of his shop, and she couldn’t do magic in front of him. Normally the energy would disperse on its own, and it couldn’t be detected long range, exactly why her ancestors had settled in a small Midwestern town, away from where you’d expect witches to congregate. Witch hunters had been off their trail for decades. Until now.

I have to warn the others.

She shivered a little. “Likewise. Talk to you later.”

Regardless of whether that was even a suitable response, Danica hurried out front and collected her gear, darting to the door before he could unlock it. Titus rushed after her, seeming confused by her sudden urgency, but she didn’t pause to soothe him. If her bad feeling turned out to be true, the coven could be in deep shit.

Kerry and Priya were hosting tonight, and Danica raced home to catch a ride with Clem. Her cousin could tell she was agitated, but she didn’t explain. Better to tell the story just once. The other two women welcomed them after a short drive, and she said the right words about their newly redecorated home while pacing as everyone else arrived. Margie came next, followed by Vanessa and Ethel; then Leanne arrived last.

Ethel took one look at Danica and grinned. “You got laid. And it waspowerful.”
