“Don’t cry, Charlotte.”

“You didn’t even come after me. Or call.”

“I was in bits last night. Barely managed my beer.”

“Hear you fucked that Cecilia Green. Maybe impregnated her.”

As she’d said it, I watched Cece bend over from the waist to pick up a towel that had fallen to the floor. She didn’t bend her knees. Aye, the view. The girl wore shorts so short I could almost see her gash. I’d like to eat the box off her and then fuck her, I would. Going in raw with the possibility of knocking her up appealed to me as well, it did. Woke up my lad. But I wasn’t a stealther. Stealthing was illegal in Ireland. You couldn’t just go around planting your seed in women without their consent. Though in Tennessee, there would be nary a wain if these men didn’t refuse to sheath their flutes. Cece’s shirt fell forward revealing her soft navel, reminding me of her silk hide under my coarse fingers. I reran our time together in my head as Charlotte chewed me out.

Tired of it, I told her, “Calm the fuck down. Cece and I were just having a laugh. We just let everyone think we had sex, is all. It was only a wee kiss, darlin’. Meant nothin’.”

“Why would you do that to me?”

“It’s complicated. Cece and I are just friends, Charlotte.” I winked in the direction of Cece who’d crossed her arms, listening to one side of my conversation.

“She’s that poor blind girl. Pagan’s sister, right?”

“Yes, that’s the one.” I winked again, feeling silly. Cece couldn’t see it.

“You must feel sorry for her, right? Is that it?”

“See, there’s nothing to worry about,” I said, only to placate her.

“Okay, babe. I’m at your door. I’ve been knocking if you want to let me in.”

What? “I’m not at home. I’ve got to stay at Royal Road for a spell.”

“You have to?”

“That’s complicated, too, Charlotte. Can we talk later?”

“What are you doing up so early?”

“Going for the cure… I’m hungover.”

“I came over to crawl into your bed with you to make up for last night.”

Charlotte had my attention now. I turned my back to Cece. “You did, aye?”

“I can come to Royal Road. Now. Just let them know at the gate to let me in.”

“It’ll have to be later. I’m working.”

“Working? I thought you were only fighting there.”

“I am. It’s club business. I really can’t talk about it. Bye, bye, bye.”

“Alright, I’ll text you later.”

As Charlotte hung up, I texted Gunn and Cricket together. No one got into Royal Road uninvited. “Charlotte Jones will be coming over to see me this week. Let her in whenever she wants.”

Gunn liked my text right away.

I slid my phone back in my pocket.

“The dishes,” Cece said, her arms still crossed.

“Aye, Charlotte. She’s jealous,” I explained to Cece.
