Kingpin echoed him in wonder, “Naked?”

My brother panted hard, about to blow a gasket.

Irish asked me, “Do you want to tell it, Cece?”

“Nah, I’m good,” I said, knowing that if I went into details Irish would get his ass whupped right then and there.

“Then, I’m grand too,” Irish said. “The lady doesn’t want it repeated. It’s time you get out of the garden, Pagan.”

A ruckus followed. A breeze slapped my face. Thwacks, feet scuffling and boots bustling sounded all around me. A thud at the floor came vibrating my feet. Pagan and Irish rolled on the floor, fighting.

Villain snickered a laugh, and Kingpin grumbled, but no one stopped them.

Lunging forward, I started to, but Kingpin caught me and held me back.

“You’ll only get hurt.”

“Stop,” I yelled. A millisecond of silence followed before the noise resumed. “Pagan, I’ll tell you the whole story if you stop hurting him.”

The noise ceased.

Kingpin whispered beside me, “Irish was winning.”

Well, that was a surprise. I knew from kissing him that my brother towered over him, like he did most men, but I supposed Irish had been winning all the cage matches lately. I’d heard a rumor Kingpin had his opponents throw their fights but doubted it now.

Pagan said, “Alright, Cece. Tell us everything.”

My brow furrowed. Sticking my hands in my pockets, I didn’t know how to begin to tell them what Irish did to me. Other than being none of their business, I didn’t want to get him in trouble. “Irish, you tell it for me, please.”

“In the dark, I took ahold of my Charlotte. I kissed her, I did. Planned to take the ride. Villain knows all about it. He just warned me not to let the ladies see me shifting my ex while the craic was up to ninety.”

“In English, for God’s sake,” my brother grumbled.

“This twat said it’d drive the women away from Royal Road if I was seen cozying up with Charlotte at the party. If the ladies found out I was no longer single, your well would dry up. So, see, I asked Charlotte to meet me in the arena, hence the kissing. But then Charlotte caught me doing the dirt on her. When she turned on the light. That’s when I realized I was shifting the wrong lass. Cece Green. And then this fecking geebag walked in saying he was going to tell her brother. Like Cece ain’t an adult or something. She can make her own choices. If she wants to let a buck like me shift her. That’s her business, so it is.”

Apparently shifting meant kissing. And technically that’s all Irish had done to me. And I gathered taking a ride sort of meant what it could mean here under the right circumstances. He’d planned to have sex with Charlotte right in the locker room. If we hadn’t been interrupted, it would’ve been me.

“He’s lying. Cece was tits out. Looked like she was ready to get rammed,” Villain insisted.

Understanding that they didn’t get that Irish did admit how far he went, I played along. “Was not. Do I look naked?” I twirled around for good measure.

“You really believe Irish didn’t know what he was doing?” Villain strained, whining to his President.

Kingpin said, “Goliath, go check out the locker room. Look for a pile of towels by the light switch.”

I spoke up, “Um, honestly, I had no idea Irish didn’t mean to kiss me, so I kissed him right back. Therefore, he wouldn’t have known he was kissing the wrong girl. I was enjoying myself until the lights came on.”

Everyone thought on that for a moment.

“Are you sure this ass wipe didn’t hurt you, sis?” Pagan strained, breaking the silence.

“No. Quite the opposite,” I said, letting a smile play at my lips. “It’s been ages since I’ve been kissed.”

Kingpin piped in, “Well, I see no harm in a kiss between consenting adults, Pagan. I say this matter is over. Let’s get back to the party.” Kingpin leaned to me. His breath smelled of whiskey and weed. “Junebug is on stage wearing nothing but a couple of real shamrocks, strategically placed, if you get my drift.” He always liked to narrate the scene for me.

Picturing it, I laughed out loud.

“And Memphis has a rainbow painted down her torso leading to a golden strip of bush. Because there’s treasure at the end of the rainbow. Get it?”
