“I think the magic gave us the push we desperately needed, but no.” I kissed him. “I don’t think magic is responsible for what I feel for you.”

“Good. Because I’m completely in love with you, Violet Fischer.”

“And I’m completely in love with you, Donovan Latham.”

A tingling spread down my arm into my palm, which burned bright with aqua light. Sparks shot into the air, bursting over my bed like a mini-fireworks show. Sapphire light from Donovan’s palm joined my aqua light. They tangled together in the air, creating a thick rope of light that swirled around us like brilliant starlight.

“What’s happening?” The awe in Donovan’s voice matched my own.

“I’m not sure.”

The light continued to spin and twirl around us, dancing in the air like bioluminescent fireflies. Pinwheels of crystal teardrops collided together and rained a soft blue glitter over our heads. Suddenly, the light changed directions and began to flow into us instead of outward.

It wasn’t aqua or sapphire, but a bright and clear sky blue. More beautiful than a cloudless summer day on the island.

As the last flicker of light winked out, I pressed a hand to my stomach, where my magic dipped and swirled inside me. Jumping off the bed, I took Donovan’s hand and threw open my bedroom window. Thousands of voices overlapped. The birds swooping low in the sky, the hermit crabs on the beach searching for new shells, the squirrels scavenging the food tourists had dropped on the sidewalks. The chatter of all the animals on the island.

And I understood them all.

“I have your power, I can hear—” I turned to Donovan and threw my hands over my mouth. “Oh my God. That is so freaky.”

Donovan raised a hand to his neck and gingerly touched his gills. “Stop looking at me like I’m the Swamp Thing. You’re going to give me a complex.”

“I’m sorry.” I covered my eyes and peeked between my fingers. “It’s so weird seeing you like that. I’ll get used to it. I just need a minute.”

“I’m pretty sure I didn’t react this badly to yours,” he grumbled.

“Um … pretty fucking sure you didn’t talk to me for, like, three weeks.”

“Not because of your gills.” He moved in closer and pulled me against him. “I didn’t trust myself not to throw you on the nearest flat surface and fuck the living shit out of you.”

“That shouldnotturn me on.”

“But it does, doesn’t it?” His hard cock pressed against my stomach. “Because you’re a dirty girl who likes my filthy mouth.”

I trailed a finger down his chest, feeling him swell even more. “Tell me more about all the things you wanted to do when we first activated our magic, Fish Boy.”

“That’snotmy new nickname.”

I bit my lip. “What are you going to do if I keep calling you that?”

He let out a growl and lifted me off my feet so fast the air left my lungs. Sitting on the edge of my mattress he bent me over his lap. I squirmed against his powerful thighs in anticipation of what he would do next.

He ran his palm over me, sending delicious shivers racing down my spine. “So smooth. How bad do you want me to turn this ass pink?”

“Not at all.”

“I think you’re lying to me.” He pushed between my legs and swirled his finger around my clit. “I think you want it so bad, you’re soaking my hand right now. But I’m not going to do it unless you tell me you want it.”

“I don’t want it.”

“You don’t? Okay.” He continued to run his hand over my ass, stroking it, kneading it, but not fully giving me what I needed.

I spread my legs and tried to get some friction, but he held me still. Finally, I when I couldn’t stand it anymore, I whispered, “I want it.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t quite catch that.”

Asshole.
