Myalarmwentoffat the ungodly hour of four in the morning. I’d already told Wes and Cole I’d be taking the rest of the week off work to focus on practicing my magic with Violet. Wes had no problem with it, seeing as he’d been trying to get me to do just that for weeks. Cole bitched, but Cole always bitched, so that was nothing new.
But getting up this early when I had the day off seemed like a waste. I would’ve much rather spent the day in bed. Preferably with Violet. There wasn’t a minute that had gone by in the last day where she hadn’t been on my mind.
The way her cheeks flushed with desire. The way her mouth parted while she stared at me as I grew hard for her, like she couldn’t wait to wrap those heart-shaped lips around my cock. I took myself in my hand, picturing my face between her tits, sucking and biting on her nipples as I drove into her tight, wet heat. My balls tightened, and my release came fast and hard.
I’d no sooner cleaned myself up than I was picturing her spread out on my sheets. She’d prop herself up on her elbows, teasing me at first, making me beg for it. But then she’d part her creamy legs, baring herself to me. And just like that, I was hard again.
This was going to be a problem.
I couldn’t even keep myself in check just thinking about her. Being close to her, touching her, breathing in her coconut and lime scent would drive me to the edge of my sanity, if not push me off the ledge altogether.
It had to be so intense because we’d gone weeks without touching after that first time. Once our magic had activated, we should’ve been practicing all along. Wes had tried to warn me. Bottling it up for so long would only make it worse in the long run. Now Violet and I both had all this pent-up energy we needed to release, and I damn well wouldn’t be doing it by burying myself inside her like I wanted. Not when her magic was doing the talking for her.
Despite that brief moment in her apartment when her eyes had cleared and she’d taken control, the side effects still had a grip on both of us. Which was absolutely a hell of my own making. I deserved to suffer like the miserable, horny bastard I’d become, but hopefully it wouldn’t last forever. At some point, we’d figure out how to work with our magic.
I got myself off again in the shower—because apparently, these days, I couldn’t leave the house without coming at least twice—then headed to the kitchen to start the coffee and let Sandy out the back door to do her morning business. The first steaming sip of caffeine woke me up as I stood on my deck and breathed in the early morning air. The porch swing I’d hung the summer I moved in swayed in the slight breeze that blew in from the ocean.
My neighbors still slept soundly. It would be another few hours before any of them rolled out of bed for another summer day on the island. They all made their livelihood off these peak tourist months, and I had to wonder just how many of them would turn on me once I publicly declared my support for shutting down the island for the remainder of the season.
Probably all of them. But that wasn’t my biggest concern at the moment.
“Sandy.” I let out a short whistle. “Let’s go, girl.”
She came bounding up to the deck with her floppy tongue lolling out of her wide mouth. I scratched her behind the ear before I led her to the gate around the side of my house. A dense fog hovered over the streets as we headed to Violet’s apartment.
I’d thought about leaving Sandy with my parents for the week. I didn’t like the idea of her hanging around while the curse took swings at us. If anything happened to my dog, I’d lose my shit. But Violet said she’d probably be able to sense oncoming danger before we did, and it was hard to argue with that. Animals were always the first to know.
I knocked on Violet’s door and she answered wearing nothing but a thin tank top and a pair of boy shorts that rode high on her ass cheeks. Fucking hell. It was like she was trying to torture me on purpose. Her eyes were puffy with sleep, she had a crease from her pillow running down the length of her face, and her hair was a tangled knot on top of her head.
I’d never seen her look more beautiful.
My idiot dog, who I loved second only to the woman standing before me, pushed her way into the apartment and promptly shoved her nose between Violet’s legs.
She let out a husky laugh as she crouched down and rubbed Sandy’s ears, while Sandy beat her tail enthusiastically against the floor in response. “Good morning to you too, baby. But just so you know, I’d prefer it if you bought me dinner first.”
“Sorry.” I pulled on Sandy’s collar as she rained slobbery kisses all over Violet’s face. “I’ve been trying to house-train her, but I fear she’s a lost cause.”
Something on the beach must’ve caught Sandy’s attention because she promptly abandoned us both for the sliding glass door. Her tail wagged hard enough to drum up a wind tunnel as she paced back and forth in front of the closed door, but she didn’t bark. I’d trained her to have some manners, despite the most recent evidence to the contrary.
Violet stood and turned her attention to me for the first time. “Is that coffee?” She yanked the travel mug out of my hand and took a sip. She let out a deep sigh that had my cock twitching. “I’m not fully awake yet. Hit snooze too many times.”
That didn’t surprise me in the slightest. Violet had never been much of a morning person and she slept like the dead. She hadn’t even felt the earthquake that had released magic to the island’s descendants. She slept right through it. If we hadn’t touched that day by the park, she might’ve never known about her powers.
“I told you getting up this early was going to be a pain in the ass.” I took my coffee back and went into her kitchen—feeling as at home in there as in my own—to start a fresh pot. “If you’re worried about tourists, we could practice at my parents’ private beach.”
“No.” She chewed on her bottom lip as she turned her gaze to her narrow balcony and the ocean beyond it. “The curse struck the main beach. We should stay there.”
“Ri-i-ight.” I drew the word out. “Because we want to grab the curse’s attention before we’ve had the chance to gain control of our powers … why?”
She turned those gorgeous sky blue eyes on me, and right then, I was certain I’d burn down the world for this woman. “We have control of our powers.”
“Speak for yourself, Cricket.”
She waved a hand. “I’m not talking about the side effects. We can’t do anything about that until we build up a tolerance to each other. I’m talking about our powers. I had no trouble navigating through the water. You handled that shark with ease.”
“Okay. So what are we practicing for?” As much as I wanted to spend time with Violet—I’d missed her like hell—I didn’t see the point in putting ourselves in danger for no reason.
