She looked around as if she was trying to find the source of my voice.

“Mark?”

“I’m not home right now.”

She looked up and flapped her hands in exasperation. “Is this a fucking recording? This is stupid.”

I laughed.

“Where are you? Recordings don’t laugh.”

“I’m in my car,” I said.

“But you’re talking to me.”

“Ring cam,” I said.

Her face zoomed in close as she looked into the doorbell. “That’s a fun toy. Where are you?”

“I’m still stuck. Hold up a sec.” The radio announcer began talking about the accident.

It was a bad one involving a big rig and several vehicles. Multiple lanes were closed and there was an unconfirmed fatality. I let out a heavy breath.

“It looks like I’m stuck here for a while. Bad accident. Do you want to reschedule? I don’t know how long this is going to take.”

“Hell no, I don’t want to reschedule. I’ll head over to the bookstore, and you can text me when you’re closer.”

“Yeah, but I’m not going to have time to get the grill going. And…”

“So, we do take out, and you show off your grill-master skills another day.”

“You aren’t going to let me bow out of this gracefully, are you?”

She looked over her shoulder and stepped in close to the ring cam. She pulled down her top, exposing the lace edge of her bra and an expanse of breast.

“Fuck,” I said on a breath. It was a good thing I wasn’t actively driving. Getting a tantalizing flash like that could cause another serious accident.

“You still want a rain check on tonight?” she asked. She was a temptress.

“You don’t mind waiting?” I asked.

“You’ve kept me waiting since Monday. What’s another hour or two?”

“You don’t have to go to the bookstore.” I hit the unlock feature.

She jumped and stared at the doorknob. “Did you just do something, or is your house haunted?”

“I unlocked the door. Why don’t you go in and make yourself comfortable?”

“Oh, you have fancy toys. Seriously, you just remotely unlocked the house?”

“Try it,” I suggested.

She opened the door and disappeared from my view. I heard her make a happy excited noise and then she ran back outside and looked at the camera. “That’s so cool Mark!”

“Make yourself at home. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Wait, Mark.”
