“I’m never drinking tequila again,” she said as she reached over to turn the lamp on. She let out a groan when she realized the man standing in front of her was, in fact, not a hallucination. “What are you doing here? It’s after midnight.”
“You called me and then blocked my number. Again.”
“No. The tequila called you and I intervened and blocked your number.” She tried to sound assertive, but it came out slurred. She threw her head back against the pillow, hoping this was all a dream she would soon wake from.
“Are you drunk?”
She couldn’t tell if he was concerned or pissed.
“Maybe. Why does it matter?”
“Why?”
“Why what?” Sam countered. Her words were less coherent than she’d initially thought.
“Why are you drunk?”Concerned. He was definitely concerned.
“Because boys are idiots.”
He raised his eyebrows. “You’re drunk because I’m an idiot?”
“No. Wait. Actually, yes you are an idiot. But I’m drunk because my life is shit right now and I hate nephrology.”
“You’re not making any sense.”
“I think I failed my exam.” She closed her eyes and pulled up the blanket over her shoulders.
“So, you got wasted and called me?”
“I already told you that was not me.” She tried to sound coherent, but her words continued to come out slurred.
“Sam. You have been ignoring me all week.”
“I’m still ignoring you.” She gave him a lazy smile.
“You’re talking to me.”
“You just broke into my house. I should call the cops.”
“I’m here because I’m worried about you.”
His voice was so sad, and so distant, and she wanted nothing more than to walk straight up to him, wrap him in her arms and hold him until the end of time. She quickly shook her head. That was the tequila talking, not her.
“Did you steal Micah’s key?” she quickly questioned before her mind could venture down any other paths.
“What?” Callum furrowed his brow.
“How did you get in?”
“Kristin let me in.”
Ugh. She and Kristin would be having words in the morning.
“Well, tell her to let you out.” Sam turned back over and pulled the blanket up over her head.
“Sam. Can we please talk?”
“I’m drunk right now. I don’t think that would be smart.” Her muffled slur was barely audible. She creased her eyes at him, hoping he could see the frustration building, but then realized her head was still under the blanket.Ugh.
