They would probably take him to jail for it, but that was what he wanted. He felt his fist clench and expand as the vision of what he would do once in that cell became clearer.
“Callum. Man.” Micah reached down to grasp his hands and then pulled him in. “Calm down. You’re going to hyperventilate.”
Callum felt the tears hit his cheeks before he even knew he was crying.
“Shit man. Okay. Okay. It’s okay. Let me check, and I’ll try to get us back there.”
The second Micah stood up, Kristin walked through the sliding doors.
“It’s useless. She is still somewhat out of it and can’t really talk, and they won’t let us back there until she gives the okay.”
“This is fucking insane!” Callum screamed through the tears.
“What about Connor?” Kristin asked.
That got Callum’s attention. “What?”
“What about Connor? When I saw him at my parents house, he mentioned he was on a rotation this semester at Baptist ER. He could be in there right now. See if he can get us in there.” Kristin was pleading now.
Callum hadn’t spoken to Connor in months. Theirs wasn’t necessarily the worst relationship, but since everything had gone down with their parents, they had barely spoken. None of that mattered. He hit the button before he even thought twice.
Connor answered on the second ring.
“What's wrong?” For some reason, his older brother’s voice was exactly what he needed to hear.
“Are you at Baptist?”
“Yes.” Connor’s reply was quick.
“I can’t get in. My girlfriend is inside, and they won’t let me in.” He wasn’t even sure if the words were clear. He just needed to get it out as quickly as possible.
“Where are you?”
“Outside the ER on a bench by the parking lot.”
“Give me five minutes and I’ll be there.”
The line went dead.
True to his word, Connor came directly outside. Callum had been able to hold in most of his emotions until that point, but for some reason seeing his older brother—the brother he hadn’t spoken with for months, the brother he was sure still hated him for breaking up their perfect little family bubble, the brother who used to be his best friend—it broke him.
He crashed into Connor, wrapping his arms around his neck.
“What happened?” Connor questioned anyone who would listen as Callum let the dam break. Micah gaped, clearly unable to voice anything. Kristin was sobbing along with Callum. When it was clear that no one else was able to answer, Callum pulled back and looked Connor in the eye.
“It’s my girlfriend, Sam. Samantha Williams…” And then Callum explained what had happened and the connection with Christian.
“Oh my god,” Kristin stated in utter shock, slapping a hand over her mouth as the reality of how they were all intertwined came to light. “Oh my god!” She kept repeating it over and over, as if saying it out loud would somehow make the situation more real.
“Okay.” Connor took a deep breath and looked between them. “Let me go in and find out what’s going on. I’m still technically a resident, so I don’t have that much sway, but I can maybe get one of you in or find out more about her condition.” He started to walk off, but then turned back to grab Callum by the face. “She isn't currently my patient, but even if I can’t get you in there, I promise to try and have her switched to my care. Okay? I’ll make sure she is taken care of. I’ll park my ass in her room for the remainder of the night if needed, okay?”
“Thank you.” There were still tears running down Callum's face when Connor ran off. “Connor!” Callum yelled. “Tell her I…tell her I’m here, okay? Make sure she knows I’m here.”
Chapter 58 - Sam
The light was bright, and there was so much beeping. She tried to turn her head, but her disorientation brought on a wave of nausea that sent her vomiting into a blue bag.
She reached out to grab the arm of the person holding that bag, but she was too unsteady.
