He had to be lying, I decided. If he was the man from the alerts, and I was bound to believe he was, then I was in grave danger. Not only had he killed General Chemkov, but I had also watched him kill General Lackey and a handful of his colleagues. He hadn’t killed me, yet, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t coming. Besides, everyone knew that men kept their female victims alive for other reasons before killing them. He was probably just trying to get me somewhere secluded so he could turn on me.
It was classic predator behavior. Why had he separated me from my group, if not to take advantage of me? There was no good reason, as far as I could tell, and he wasn’t even attempting to make me feel better, which meant he had probably already made up his mind.
Oh, gods. I had been unconscious. What had he done to me while I was out?
I began a mental checklist, moving down my body from my head to my toes, searching for anything unusual. But other than the sore spot on my leg where the dart had struck home, I detected nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe he just hadn’t had time to enact his plan. Either way, I was not just going to sit here and let it happen. I knew how to take care of myself.
“Excuse me, Herod. I would like to request to speak with your superiors. Whoever is in charge of this little operation.”
He looked back at me over his shoulder and smirked.
“You’re talking to him.”
I shook my head in disbelief.
“I work for myself. I only went on this little raid to help out an old friend. Now if you’d just shut up and relax, we would get there a whole lot faster. Maybe another tranquilizer would help?”
Was he threatening me? How dare he!
I was about to give him a piece of my mind when he held up a hand to silence me and then concentrated on something that was happening inside his headset.
