Nineteen
Aggie
I was still angry and out of sorts when I got back to the cottage. I dumped the wagon at the door and stormed inside. Luka looked up from the table where he’d been going over some letters delivered for him at his aunt’s. When he saw me cross the threshold, his entire face lit up.
I don’t know if it was the odd hurt that still lingered in my chest when I saw Quinn with Donna, but I just wanted it to go away. I crossed the distance between Luka and I and threw myself at him, straddling him in the chair as my hands grabbed his hair. I kissed him boldly.
He grunted in surprise then wrapped his arms tightly around my waist, pushing my hips down against his growing erection. He matched the intensity of my kiss, and then we were nothing but teeth and tongues as we fought each other for dominance. Magick escaped me in wild wisps, and I struggled to reel it back in. Reluctantly, I pulled my face away.
Luka was panting, his green eyes ringed with gold from his wolf form. A low growl rumbled from his chest, but I put a hand out to keep us apart.
“I—hold on,” I said. “My magick.”
I closed my eyes and tried to push it back, but it fought me and pushed out twice as hard. I growled in frustration, and the lights in my cottage flickered. Glass vials rattled on their shelves, and pots shook in my cupboards. I shot a terrified, angry look to Luka, who looked completely unphased. He had eyes only for me.
“You can’t keep pushing it away like this. It isn’t healthy.”
I didn’t want to hear him talk, especially when he was right. I pushed him down into his chair and seized his mouth again. His hands went underneath my bottom and pulled me to him. Then he stood, and I took the opportunity to wrap my legs around his waist. With a grunt he pushed me against the wall.
Then he froze against me, refusing to move even as I tried to grind myself wantonly against him. What was wrong with him? I snarled in frustration, then went still when he put razor-sharp claws at my neck.
“You’re going out in the garden and calming down. This isn’t how either of us want this to happen. You’re angry about something. I don’t want to do this if you’re using me to escape from something else.”
I writhed against him, uncaring as a long red line appeared on my neck. He hissed and withdrew, and my magick threatened to explode out of me. I kicked my leg out from his waist and swept it under his knee, and he dropped me. I used my momentum to drive him to the floor with me on top. I grinded against him without shame, even as he growled in need. His hard arousal rubbed against my inner thigh, and—
With a massive burst of strength Luka picked me up and practically threw me out the back door and into the garden. Magick flared around me and cushioned my landing. As soon as my hands and knees made contact with the earth, the chaos in my blood settled. Magick rushed out of me and into the ground, shaking the nearby trees as it shot out into the forest. A rumble of thunder was heard in the distance, and I winced.
“I know I’m sexy as hell, but the thunder is new.”
Luka leaned against the doorframe, looking tempting as sin in his tight jeans and flannel shirt. At some point I must have unbuttoned it because it hung loosely off his frame, displaying his abs to the entire world. I was caught between arousal, embarrassment for assaulting him, and gut-wrenching fear that I had just announced my location to the supernatural world.
“You seem annoyingly flippant about all of this.”
He grinned, running a hand through his blonde hair. My eyes glazed over, remembering how soft it felt when I’d pulled it.
Luka shrugged, unconcerned. “You literally can’t keep your magick bottled up forever,” he said. “It could kill you. Karl said he was surprised it hasn’t already hurt you.
I felt a brief stab of annoyance when he admitted the two of them talked about me behind my back.
“Let me guess; you think I should take Quinn’s suggestion and take care of my little problem?”
Luka blinked slowly. How could he stand there and be so calm about everything? It annoyed me. It made me want to punch him, then ride him so hard that—
My body shook, and I struggled to get myself under control. What was going on? A pair of strong arms came around me, and Luka nuzzled my neck.
“You are not a problem. You are my mate, and I love you. I will do whatever you wish to help you, whether that includes embracing your inheritance or being on the run with you forever.”
His heartbeat was a comforting sound against my ear, steady and unyielding. I was still stuck on that one, singular word.
“You love me. It’s been only a week.”
His teeth nipped my ear, and I groaned. “I decided I loved you on the first night.”
My hands balled in the soft flannel material of his shirt, even as tears gathered in the corners of my eyes.
“Why? I’m … I’m a loser. A forty-year-old virgin witch with minimal powers, no friends, and likely to get anyone around me killed. My own mother sold me to the highest bidder—”
Luka’s finger came down on my lips, silencing me. His thumb swiped away a tear on my cheek, and he cupped my face in his hands. “You’re not allowed to ever utter such lies again.” Luka kissed my forehead. “Your mother is trash, who doesn’t deserve a magnificent daughter such as you.” His lips lowered to my eyes. “Karl and I are your friends. Davie is your friend. Half this miserable town would call you their friend.”
