“Yes.” He looked at me softly before turning to the slab and saying, “Hey. It’s been a while.”
I watched him talk to her, feeling touched by the sensitivity it showed.
“Remember the last time I told you I met someone? Well, this is her. This is Becca.” He smiled at me, the love in his eyes shining through. “Beautiful, isn’t she?”
My heart swelled. After Griffin and I went public with our relationship, we had to deal with a lot of disapproval, both from people who thought he was too old for me and others who felt I did not fit a man of his status. We ignored all the naysayers, and Griffin never hesitated to show me off wherever he went, even in front of women who craved his attention.
“Well, she’s managing,” he told the slab with a shrug.
“What did she say?” I asked curiously.
“She’s asking how you’re dealing with me and all my moods.”
I smiled, turning to address Heather. “He’s not so bad once you know how to deal with him. All he needs is a firm hand.”
Griffin rolled his eyes, and with that, I began conversing with the slab, almost as if she was right there. And she might have been—I could practically feel her kind spirit flowing in the surroundings. Even Avery woke up at one point and began chortling, at which time we introduced her to Heather.
Finally, we left with the promise that we would be back soon.
On the ride back, I recalled, “We have to be at the dinner at five, right?”
The dinner tonight was to celebrate the success of the first phase of trials for Terradol. All the patients who were on it were seeing a massive improvement in their disease and were no longer on other chemos. Side effects were minimal as well, and we would be incorporating my findings into the next phase. The entire team was having a celebratory dinner, and Marco and Leila— who’d become our very close friends—would be in attendance.
“Yes, it is,” Griffin said with a nod. There was silence for a short period of time as we enjoyed the ambiance of being in each other’s presence.
“That was nice,” I commented, referring to the visit.
“Everything is nice with you, future Mrs. McCormick,” Griffin said.
I winked at him. “Likewise, Mr. McCormick.”
The End.
